Then you waited for De Gaulle to die to get IN,now you want OUT.Make up your mind.[/quote
De Gaulle claimed that the UK entering would mean US influence. He also claimed that Britain didn't have the political will to be part of a strong union of European nations and that British economic interests weren't in line with the rest of Europe's. But considering he wanted to force the UK to abandon it's established free trade commitments when France had not done the same thing when establishing the EU it makes it sound more like De Gaulle was trying to control things, even though he was not President of the European Commission or the European Parliament.
Edward heath took us in but believe you me ,even then the Brits didn't want it, no more than we want it now.

Adalstef: BRITAIN was told to 'speak German' like the rest of Europe last night.
One of Angela Merkel's closest allies demanded that Britain be 'less selfish' towards the EU, despite being outside the single currency and consider levying a Europe-wide financial tax to help the ailing eurozone.
Volker Kauder claimed the whole of Europe was now speaking German by following Angela Merkel's leadership and so should Britain.

Many are again believing that it would be a better world if all of Europe was under the rule of a uniting German government and a single currency the Euro. That kind of unification can only bring class, order, peace and prosperity for all posterity there too.
It was always my understanding that todays English was based on Old German anyway, so Merkel maybe needs to brush up on her history, or maybe modern German should really have followed the British English path? That makes far more sense to me

Well slap my thigh and call me Peter.
Is English the Language of Business?
Current figures show that there are 350 million native speakers of English, spreading into at least 100 territories. English has become the main language in the UK, Australia, the USA and South Africa. And, even in those countries where English is not the official language, it has become the adopted first language of governments, education and international communications.
On top of the 350 million native speakers of English, there are roughly the same amount who use English as a second language and even some who use it as a third language.
As English has grown and spread around the globe it has been adopted as the language used when two parties from differing countries, who do not speak each others language, want to conduct business.
And, with access to computers and the Internet growing daily, the number of English speakers an individual can potentially reach is phenomenal.
It’s clear, from the facts laid out above, that English is not only important for business and your career – it is essential. And, this is especially true for those wanting to participate in international business.

Just a small correction, Tom...English is, in fact, one of the 11 official languages in South Africa. Business is conducted in English there (I'm not referring to informal business)
