People have delusions...fear, hate, desires and many more. Only when you recognise and face your delusions a new way of being comes into place.
The three main religions do little to help us look within to find the answers.

The unexamined life is not worth living.
- Plato

The following correction was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and clarifications column, Friday May 20 2005

Plato was credited with the quote, "An unexamined life is not worth living", in this column. It does, indeed, come from Plato's Apology, which is a recollection of the speech Socrates gave at his trial. Socrates is attributed with these words after choosing death rather than exile from Athens or a commitment to silence.

epirb: nah , just like believing in Santa , Easter bunny . Bet Christmas cost people more than most church goers put in the plate . Even thought it supposed to celebrate someone's birth .

Agree. Temples host many hypocrisy.

Religion should lead one to a better behaviour, but usually it's just theorical.

Religion is very much like a "way of life" to me. It brings a sense of "discipline and moderation" in me where i become less and less dependent on human.angel

In response to: a form of addiction

I will repeat...........addictions are normally things you wish to give up. I could give up most things.

Do you wish to give up your belief in God????? Not me!!! So I'm quite happy with that "addiction", if you wish to call it. Cos most of the other addictions pull you down.

Considering how often politics is discussed ad nauseam, I'd hazard a guess at it being very addictive to some folks. laugh

KNenagh: Yes it can be.

Otherwise why would people commit the most horrible crimes in the name of a god?

Many people are afraid of a benevolent God; they crave a wrathful unforgiving, vengeful depraved God that loves to have people kill others, just like their political leaders...

serene56: a form of addiction

Sort of. The mystical side of religiosity reflects the compulsive need to believe in the things that aren't really there, but then the other side is all about rules and restraint(keeping a lid on the compulsions).

The most compulsive people are what I call the secular mystics. Those who believe in say astrology, ghosts, reiki or the healing power of crystal skulls but have none of the rules and discipline of the religiously devout. These people are the worst of both worlds - little more than children driven by urges with neither rhyme nor reason.
