serene56: a form of addiction

Yes it can be.

Otherwise why would people commit the most horrible crimes in the name of a god?

It is a well organised power structure, which operates on the basest human emotion - fear.

A fear of what comes after this life, and a fear of lack of control in this life.

Promise a shining happy place in the next life, in return for your utter loyalty and cash in this life.

Win win.

nah , just like believing in Santa , Easter bunny . Bet Christmas cost people more than most church goers put in the plate . Even thought it supposed to celebrate someone's birth .

Many people need somethimg to fill a void in their lives.

Organised religion is there, and more than willing, to fill that void.

Just a belief for me personally. But if you understand the word addictive as something which you can't give up......then, yes, I am, because I don't want to give him up. I don't go to any church, don't like the rituals, but I believe in God.

It's a form of delusion in my opinion, but if it does only good then it's ok with me. But unfortunately there will always be that element of badness within humanity and will infiltrate all sorts of groups.

I watched a TV documentary the other night about China and the rapid growth of religion now that the communists allow it. Christianity is incredibly popular, they say that within 15 years China could become the world's most Christian nation.

This clearly demonstrates that there are many people that require a belief in something beyond reality, a blind faith of something good existing in some divine spiritual realm / dimension.

Fair enough, each to his/her own but I personally just don't get it.
My voids are my problems to fix thanks very much.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how future religious influence plays out on China's already weakening government regarding issues such as human rights, pollution, military escalation etc.

Just imagine in 10 years, China is predominately christian and America believes in witchcraft......
