I'd always chosen to walk beside a man not overshadow him.

It started in the Leftist Trade Unions, Soviet Union etc as a way to control people. Go for the weakest link and you'll control men. When you control men you control everything. And the Government and Social Engineers, win. At least temporarily, until they get over shadowed entirely by Societies with more pragmatism.
