Yes you can. Animals feel pain and happiness similar to humans, they have limbs and body parts similar to humans (just more fur! lol). They don't like being mistreated any more than we do and will fight back as best they can.
We should be eternally grateful to animals like horses, dogs, cats, cattle for what they have done for us for centuries. Every creature does something for the planet, even an insect, especially the honey bee. So, imo they are just as important as we are to planet earth and we couldn't survive without them, I don't think.

There is definitely nothing wrong with u. Most people nowadays r so nasty. Check out any of my threads and u will see it. They r always trying to nail me somehow. So animals r a lot better than most humans. In my case I prefer my kids and animals at different times or together, other people leave me cold. So then I am very much like u.

Nid I'm not everyone.I never said I loved any pet I had over my son or anyone else in my family.But there are/were times when I would choose my dog Bear over some humans.

Some people consider their pets as family while others view their pets as being personal property.
