Over 40 years after the Equal Pay Act came into force in the UK women still face a stark gap in their earnings compared to men’s and experience one of the highest pay gaps in the EU.

In 2012, comparing all work, women earned 18.6% less per hour than men. Comparing those in full-time work, women earned an average of 14.9% less per hour than men – this means that for every £1 a man takes home, a woman takes home 85p.

The pay gap varies across sectors and regions, rising to up to 33% in the City of London and 55% in the finance sector.

The ‘Motherhood Penalty’

A lack of flexible working opportunities often means that women pay a penalty at work for their caring roles and lose out on promotions, training opportunities and job progression more generally.

Added to this women are often faced with negative attitudes, discrimination and even dismissal in the workplace because of their roles, actual or potential, as mothers and carers.

Flexible working arrangements should be in place to enable women to fully participate in, and progress in the labour market – this is vital for women and the economy at large. More should also be done to encourage fathers to spend more time caring.

Discrimination hasn’t gone away

Forty years since the Dagenham machinists took action and the introduction of the Equal Pay Act, direct and indirect discrimination against women still persists in the workplace. Women council workers in Birmingham recently found out they were missing out on bonuses of up to 160% that were being rewarded to those working in male-dominated areas, such as gardening.

Welcome back All, did you get time off for good behaviour like me.

I have no axe to grind on this subject but it's being discussed in the media at the moment in the UK.

With respect to what is happening in Europe, I don't know about other parts of the world, but I suspect they have the same problems.

ref section 78 of the Equality Act 2010.

Nah.. I served the full sentence like yourself!!!... Coming back to the subject, I wasn't aware of such a difference in wage structure, especially in Central London but I've noticed the lack of opportunities for women in high powered management roles. I'm sure in time it will even itself out.

The leading fighter for equality for pay says,

In particular, we would also like to see government make a clear and firm commitment to addressing unequal pay by implementing section 78 of the Equality Act 2010 which would require businesses (of more than 250 employees) to measure and publish data on their gender pay gaps.

Something is going wrong some where,

Discrimination hasn't gone away.

There's only a pay gap if you ignore the facts that women give birth, work fewer hours, take more days of sick, work safer jobs, and choose to do jobs which pay less money. In reality, there's more of a pay gap between short men and tall men than there is between men and women(because there isn't one).

Anyway, women will not do the same jobs and earn the same money as men until such time where all jobs are spurious. The future where robots do all the real work, the government pays everyone to exists, and a premium free market arises supporting an entertainment-leisure-therapy complex which tries to prevent mankind from going insane in a world without real work and purpose.

I think a woman should get equal compensation for doing the same job as a man. If they do a better job they should get paid more and less if they don't do as good a job. The problem as I see it is women have a second job bestowed upon them by nature for which she gets little more than room & board.

Let's face it, the modern industrial world wasn't designed by nature. Nature created a world where females bore offspring and reared them and males protected them and fed them by running down antelope and bringing food to the nest. Nobody said it would be easy transitioning from life in the jungle to a corporate environment while babies are still being born and must be reared.

The caring nature of women doesn't lend itself to the often needed aggressive demeanor of a corporate executive or government official. Just look at the wishy washy response of the female Mayor of Baltimore to the recent riots and looting that nearly destroyed that city for an example.

It's the same situation here unfortunately. Not sure it will ever totally be resolved although union groups here continue to fight for wage parity between male and female wage equity.

Yes in the UK in spite of legislation to ensure equal pay, it is not working.

The situation is the same in Finland where there is a left wing government.

Old prejudices seem to die hard.

I hear ya...it didn't work for me in my previous job after many years fighting for pay equity. What they were doing was changing the job title to match the same job title in another department and basing pay on that as opposed to looking at the skill levels required in the job itself. Example...a senior program assistant in food services preparing menus compared to a senior program assistant in facilities management with a skilled trade of locksmith. Totally different skills and not necessarily unique to being a male dominated position either.

Part of the problem is people are judging the work women do as not as important...hence the wage gap...there is always some males out there that want people to think women are not as strong or capable of physical labour...but do not take into consideration other strengths...typical chauvinistic behaviour...considering most males still do not share the work at home...so in reality women have more than one job...they just don't get paid...

In response to women working less and taking more sick time...if you have children...the women who earns less often takes sick time because of their children being sick...or work less due to children needing to be reared...makes more economical sense...
