Hi,

I have a passat 1.9tdi and it shows fuel pump relay fault code on the diagnostic computer. I zero the code the car starts beautifully and when I restart the engine it shows up again (engine management light comes on and starts with a louder noise) I bought the two relay fitted it, still the code is P1541. Apart from this problem the car runs fine but for some reason the circuit stays open.
Could you please give me any idea as to why it is still not working?

Many thanks

Its a free spirit. P1541 means "My doors of opportunity with you shall be forever open yet my coolest circuit is open till I meet Dr Who"
Come on!

have you checked the fuel pump, it's self,it could be what's tripping out your relay ? and making that louder sound, maybe it's worn out ?

this might explain your problem

I purchase a Fuel Pump Relay (not a pump) that I apparently didn't need. I'm towing my Jetta to Colorado Springs tomorrow, so hopefully we'll have her back on the road soon. When attempting to start the car sounds horrible now, so I'm worried that the timing belt has slipped so she's parked & ready to tow away.
I can't see driving my Passat 1.8T to the TDI GTG, but that may happen.

dunno but if he is correct you may need to get a new timing belt fitted

manual both say: visual inspection at 144,000 km (90,000 miles), and if all is well, you can motor on to 160,000 km (100,000 miles) where definitive replacement is required.

other comment

The schedules were last updated May 16, 2008, and the 1.9 and the 2.0 PD diesel engine schedules are both revised with Timing Belts replacement (no, not check) at 80K miles (128K kms). Hey, I am not making it up, it's there in black & white. I also recently asked the local dealer when I need to do the Timing Belt, and they also want to do it at the same mileage. So, this is a fairly recent change, and maybe has not been widely published....

you can download repair manual from one these links, suggest you scan file with your anti-virus program before you open the file

That Yank is probably right could be timing belt

Don't run the motor until you have someone check that, because if it is the timing belt you'll wreck your engine

Hi Chrysa, Few things- I assume the car starts without deleting the fault code? Fuel pump relay fault is not just the relay- it covers the complete fuel pump wiring circuit. If the relay was open circuit - the car shouldn't run because the pump wouldn't be running. It seems to me to be a low voltage problem that only happens when you are cranking it to start & the ECU remembers it. Possible starting at battery connections, engine or body earths, low output alternator - the list goes on.
Unless you're good with a multi-meter - auto electrician is the way to go. Hope it helps.
