I had this in the USA forums but when I changed the subject line it switched over to international forums.

I'm sorry if anyone is offended that this thread is here.

Thanks for posting this thread, M..... it's so odd to me when I think how at one point in history nations can be allies, and there's bitter enemies. peace forevermore....

Thank you Trigsy hug

A few of the survivors, who are very old gentlemen, were on tv this past weekend. Their memory of the day is as vivid of mine on Sept. 11th. sad flower

World changing events will forever be imprinted in the minds of those who experienced them first hand or witnessed them...it's humbling stuff and will be carried forward for generations to come. hug

Twice as many people died on Sept. 11th.

Yet I don't think the older generation, who were alive on December 7th, feel the same impact about Sept. 11th.sigh

This is true but it's an impact nonetheless and the Sept. 11th event will forever be ingrained in my memory as it will in yours and others. hug

Sept 11th was hijacked in a way Pearl Harbour never was, so the memory of Pearl harbour stays much purer.

Salute to America on this day, and respect to her dead.

Maybe after those wars they realised why they got that help, and how much that will now cost them in the future?

The attack on Pearl Harbour was a reckless act by the Japanese, still a great puzzle to many who have studied that era. But the fact remains that without that awful attack and the deaths it created, the USA would never have entered the wars in Europe and Asia, and who know what state Asia would be in today, had America not aided those countries invaded by Japan.

And yet now Japan is Americas greatest ally in Aisa, how things change.

Most people these days only know a couple of sentences uttered by FDR regarding the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. There were far more sneak attacks throughout the Pacific regeon at the same time as part of Japans decision to start a world war. Here is the full speech.

How do you post utubes these days?

I wonder what would happen if we commemorated the deaths our own nations have been responsible for with as much sadness and regret.

The Dresden bombings, the Ruhr Valley dams (I remember my mother commenting that the people drowned like rats when my dad was thouraghly enjoying the glorified depiction of events in the film 'The Dam Busters'), Hiroshima, Nagasaki and goodness know what atrocities our countries have committed since.

Maybe that would involve a bit more humility and generosity of spirit than we're capable of. dunno

Give it a try to memorialize the deaths in the tragedies that you mentioned. You might learn something about yourself Jac.
