Car54: The "great" civilisations of the past didn't FAIL miserably or we wouldn't be calling them GREAT.
They FELL due to many reasons, some social, some military and some from outside pressure.
The ancient Greek civilisation didn't "fail" since we're still using their system of government.
The Roman empire didn't "fail", we're still using their military tactics and many other aspects of their civilisation.
Just because a civilisation is no more doesn't mean they failed.
But they did...
Mayan, Egyptian...

The Mayans didn't "fail". A severe drought, exacerbated by widespread logging, triggered the Mayan demise.

As for the Egyptians, a loss of military power and lackluster military development due to available natural resources; political conflicts led to the eventual split of the empire into northern and southern areas and a protracted civil war between the two regions. These forces signaled the initial fragmentation of the Egyptian state as it was and opened the door for other growing empires to invade and take Egyptian territory.
The fall of a civilisation isn't necessarily linked to a failure by the mentality of its people.
Apologies for the Mansplaining.

What I put in "failed" was the inability to survive despite the progress made...
Being advanced in our own time isn't a guarantee we can survive when challenged by something primitive...

The Roman empire ruled over the known world for 507 years. It began with the crowning of Gaius Octavian Thurinus in 31 B.C. and fell to the German Goths in A.D. 476.
I call 507 years of rule a success! Especially with the means they had way back then.
Name another civilisation that "failed" so spectacularly.

I agree.

Car54: I didn't invent the term. I'm simply using it in proper context as was intended by the originator of it.
Oh all right then.

MisterForYou: One of the last things Stephen Hawking proclaimed is our Planet will be hit by an Asteroid... I hate to sound pessimistic grin, but it can't happen soon enough. I believe Heaven and Hell are here on Earth, and Hell is in the drivers seat, speeding without a seat belt. IF there was an almighty god, Heaven would never allow Hell to 'rule' his "greatest creations". In our defunct world, their is no absolute justice!

peace help

Quit blaming God. Leave Him out of Human stupidity, greed and injustice!
This planet is only 'hell' because Mankind has willingly given up the teachings of the prophets and apostles for a Lie in order to satisfy Flesh and Mind.
God did not order or condone what we now see happening around the world. Those things we now see are the very events God warned us would happen if Mankind abandoned the sacred teachings and the Love we ought to have for our own Creator and His creation.
Mankind thought it was more cleaver than its Creator and is now suffering the consequences. All your 'hell on Earth' is self-inflicted. No need to cry about it now!

So the scoffers will keep scoffing and mockers will mock, even through the apocalypse.

Our only excuse is "To err is human".
A very lame excuse if you ask me.
