I started to lean German language, but it's not going well at all. Must say, it's kinda difficult, specially the grammar frustrated and having trouble finding well structured German course online.

Can someone recommend me a concise good learning book / course for beginner ?

Thank you

Hello abrakadabra!

It's not the best but it is free and online (if you turn off your adblockers). Duo Lingo. There are about 5 words in German for the word "the". I agree German is hard to learn.

Hi,
I learnt German when I was at school (13 to 16) but more recently chose to start learning it again. School environment helped a lot with the grammar and sentence structure. Don't get too concerned about the "der die das" "den die das" des der des" "dem der dem" etc. It will give you a headache.
I think that grammar will come to you in time, especially if you start to read magazines and newspapers. I'd suggest getting an app to learn words and phrases. Focus on grammar later. Build your vocabulary first. I used Learn German (an ipad app) which I found very useful and flexible. Try it, and if you can work with it, upgrade for a few Euros.

Thank you very much for all helpful and interesting suggestions.

I'll test/try Rosetta Stone and Duolingo and really wish to ignore the grammar part, but then I will end up staring like a dummy in German text. Not to mention that German vocabulary is headache on its own.

Good luck to me and to those who are learning German comfort

My experience from learning English from scratch:

- Start with very simple words and sentences. Do not advance before you are really ready.
- Repeat every new word at least 5 times a day during a week.
- Use every new word in different sentences. Pay attention to appropriacy (not always easy, especially with preposions).
- Practice at least 30 min every day.
- Practice active languge: eg. not only read / listen to ready material, but make your own sentences, express your thoughts.
- Participate in a forum in that language. There will be jerks, invariantly, who will bully you for your faults - never mind them. Just honk and drive :)

Good luck!

For what it's worth, the poll on following thread gives an idea on different levels of proficiency and how a few CS members position themselves:

Langfocus is a popular YouTube channel on languages. The below video is on German:

You may succeed acquiring passive knowledge rather easily. When watching a German film on DVD, make sure to switch to the original version and read subtitles in your own language. You can watch it twice or more to get familiar with the pronunciation and 'learn the story'. Then try to understand without any subtitles.

Hallo Abrakadabra.

Du brauchst jemanden, der Dir mit Lehrerqualität die deutsche Grammatik beibringt.
Kalkuliere mit ungefähr zehn Stunden. Viel Glück!
