Well, there are many reasons for happiness and sorrow but in some scriptures generally happy-life is divided into four categories: Good health, enough wealth, virtuous life-partner and obedient son/daughter.
One who has all these four categories can be called complete happy-person. But the meaning of happiness and sorrow can be different for different people.
