Yesterday, at 9:00 A.M., I had my very first ever, in more than two million miles, accident involving another vehicle: I was approaching a traffic light in Spindale, NC. when the light turned green. Traffic started to move forward and the last vehicle in line moved into the intersection, then stopped short - ostensibly to make a left hand turn, althought she didn't use her turn signal - I couldn't quite get stopped and "tapped" her. (When I say "tapped," I mean that the impact was neglible - less than 5mph. I didn't even know I'd hit her until she rolled forward and I saw the twin dimples left in the lid of her trunk by the bolts on my bumper.)
To make a long story short, she complained of back pain and requested an ambulance. I was not cited for the accident and there was zero damage to the truck I was driving. But this morning, after delivering my load and arriving at my home terminal, I was informed by the safety manager that it was "company policy" to suspend anyone involved in an "injury accident" pending a full investigation.
In a way, this might be good news, as I am not happy with the company anyway and was already looking for "greener pastures." On the other hand, I can't help but feel frustrated by the way I've been treated. Mostly, I'm hoping to use this "temporary suspension" to find a company that will actually tell me the truth and keep their promises.
Oh, and never once - despite asking about the other vehicle and driver and the condition of my truck - did the "safety manager" ever ask if I was okay...

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent!
I'd say the gal is in need of $$$$ I've ran into walls walking at 5 mph and never incurred whiplash.
Don, I wish you luck in your search. Unfortunately, most all companies are pretty much the same anymore. Protect yourself as best you can. I smell a lawsuit coming. Glad it was just a minor accident.
Venting day today .... huh? That's cool Kansan. Vent away Those stupid drivers in some cases do this on porpouse to get insurance money .... And your safety manager is unprofessional, heartless moron! So here is to you and our hurt feelings
Hey Kansan, as I said yesterday, just glad that you are alright. I know it's a crap situation in the lovely land of lawsuits and liability... but there could well be a brighter side, sounds like you weren't happy with your company, and I'm sure you've paid enough into the system to get a little unemployment... take this time reassess your work life and look around... you mind find this little fender bender is the best thing that ever happened, it often takes something negative happening for us to make changes in our lives. Good Luck!

First & foremost I'm glad you are alright. From what you say this company does'nt sound like it cares how it treats the employees, you are probably better off without them. Did they even take your driving record into consideration? I mean, 2 million miles and never and accident that is worth backing you up on. Anyway, glad you came to us to "vent" after all that's what friends are for.
Thanks everyone! Well, today's a new day and in a little while, I'll start making phone calls in the hopes of finding something better. Jackson told me that things happen for a reason and I'm trying to believe that, but I must admit that it's been a rather crushing blow to my fragile male ego.
I hope you're not developing back pain, too, Kansan.
I had a similar experience once - a person just stopped in front of me with no warning, and the accident was cited as being my fault. The behavior of your company was unfair and unintelligent, imo.

Jeff
To be honest, Jeff, I've so many back injuries over the years that I'm not sure I could tell whether it was from the accident or just sleeping wrong. The impact was so minimal that I initially thought I'd been able to stop in time. Didn't know 'til she rolled forward that I'd actually tapped her. I mean, I had my CD album on the passenger seat and my laptop sitting on the edge of the bunk and neither of them hit the floor.
The investigating officer was a super guy and clearly sympathetic to me and even the insurance agent I spoke with from our company seemed to understand, but the safety manager seemed to be of a completely different nature - Just by virtue of the fact that I was "suspended pending a full investigation," means, to me, that he considers me guilty until proven innocent.
But, like I said earlier, today's another day and maybe this is for the best.
A similar thing happened to me several years ago. Going south by Newark airport in NJ a car in front of me stood on his brakes because he saw a parking lot he wanted to park in to catch a plane. I couldn't quite stop and tapped him at maybe 3 MPH. There was no damage whatever to his vehicle except a little paint from my bumper transferred to his bumper. He insisted on exchanging info anyway and put a claim in for $800.00 saying his bumper & trunk were smashed etc. I told the ins co to send an adjuster to look at the car because the guy was obvioulsy commiting ins fraud. They never bothered but instead payed up. When I asked them (Progressive) why they didn't check his car they said that whenever there is a car/truck accident that only comes to 800 bucks they pay up without question. Needless to say I've never dealt with Progressive again.

I'm sorry to hear about that Kansan, well you know how those saftey directors are. They're more worried about the load and the equipment than the driver. Fortunately I found a company where They care more for the driver than if a load's. Hope it all gets resolved quickly.
I was involved ion one myself about 2 weeks ago but a woman driving a honda accord tried to merge in front of me from the right lane that ended, and I never seen her. Thankfully we was in a backup , but she did do alot of damage to her car, and spidercracked my fender and bent my bumper pretty good
Thanks, everyone, for your replies. In fairness to the gal I tapped; I spoke with the insurance adjuster yesterday who had the opportunity to visit with her and view the damage to her vehicle. He said that she seemed sincere and appeared to just want to get on with her life. He also explained that she had suffered a prior back injury and elected to go to the hospital just to be safe - I can't fault her there, as I've had previous back injuries myself and would probably take the same action.
I AM still a little peeved and bummed at the way I was treated by the safety manager; i.,e., "guilty until proven innocent." But I suppose I'll get over that eventually - Especially if I'm able to use this time off to find a better job with a better company. Mostly I'm glad that it wasn't any worse than it was...
