Karma3: Hi Sommer, what I don't get is why people (without children) prefer to adopt a pet rather than a homeless, orphan child.
Not all people want children, or they have already raised families and are content with the companionship of a pet.
For myself, my daughter is grown and my lifestyle since she left home is quite nomadic and not suitable for a child or pet... I plan to settle down a bit and may consider a pet in the not to distant future... but would be unwilling to take on the responsibility of another child.

Hi JB, I understand wanting a pet for companionship in later life when energy levels required to raise a child are not what they used to be. But what about childless young couples? Why would they rather have a pet than a child in their home?

Some people just aren´t interested in being parents... it´s not mandatory that a person feel a maternal or paternal instinct and for those who don´t... isn´t it better that they don´t have children rather then to just do whats expected?
Raising a child is a huge life changing experience and some people don´t want to deal with the responsibility... a pet is a 10 to 15 year commitment... a child is the rest of your life.

We've kinda done both. I have adopted 8 yr old an abused red heeler cross, from Animal Welfare, and she continues to delight everyone she meets
And for several years, while we (that is, my son and I), fostered, not adopted, a young boy, same age as my son at the time, for several years. He stayed with us just about every month for a full weekend for respite. He had been diagnosed with ADHD, learning/developmental disability, and autism spectrum disorder. He ws the most wonderful child to have around. He was supposed to a regular bedwetter, but not once did he wet his wet while staying with us. He was supposed to be terrified of fireworks, but I shall never forget the look on his face, and how wide open his eyes grew, at the sight of these fabulous fireworks we took him to watch. Oh, and he was supposed to feel scared of large crowds. He coped brilliantly with a crowd of about 1,000 people. Just goes to show not to believe everything you hear!
We are still good friends to this day with both Scott, and his family.
And when Amber leaves us, there will be another deserving creature to adopt.

Good on you and your son Venere for opening your home to Amber Scott.

Now to be honest, some people are far better pet owners than they would ever be a parent. Some are so selfish, that all they care about his their hair, nails and clothes, and has absolutely nothing left over for a child. I think it takes an entire Village to raise a child, and from what is going on in the World right now, some people do not have the Resources to raise a child decent. Some folks prefer to go all the way to Africa or other places to adopt kids, while in their own country their are kids that need adopting also. To that I say, had they not gone there to that country or place that child would never have left the orphanage. Goldfish, or other fish in the fish tank, definitely need taken care of, fed regularly, the tank need cleaning and the water need changing often. So if your schedule is so busy that you can't even remember to look after the fish, then visiting the aquarium rather than bringing home the fish is a better option. You have to look at your lifestyle and see what is best for you, not what is best for anyone else. If you feel a need to, why not donate to the Feed the Children, and the Animal shelter, at best someone will greatly appreciate your doing so.
I always notice in restaurants that have those little donation jars by the register, the jars for helping stray animals get filled faster than the ones to feed the homeless
