What We Could Have Spent The Iraq War Funding On October 27, 2008|

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — When the Sunday morning political pundits began talking last year about the tab for the war in Iraq hitting $1 trillion, Rob Simpson sprang from his sofa in indignation.
"Why aren't people outraged about this? Why aren't we hearing about it?" Simpson said. And then it came to him: "Nobody knows what a trillion dollars is."
The amount _ $1,000,000,000,000 _ was just too big to comprehend.
So Simpson, 51, decided to embark "on an unusual but intriguing research project" to put the dollars and cents of the war into perspective. He hired some assistants and spent 12 months immersed in economic data and crunching numbers.
The result: a slim but heavily annotated paperback released, "What We Could Have Done With the Money: 50 Ways to Spend the Trillion Dollars We've Spent on Iraq."
Simpson is no geopolitical, macro-economic, inside-the-Beltway expert. He's an armchair analyst and creative director for an advertising agency, a former radio announcer and music critic in Ontario and a one-time voiceover actor.
His alternative spending choices reflect his curiosity and wit.
He calculates $1 trillion could pave the entire U.S. interstate highway system with gold _ 23.5-karat gold leaf. It could buy every person on the planet an iPod. It could give every high school student in the United States a free college education. It could pay off every American's credit card. It could buy a Buick for every senior citizen still driving in the United States.
"As I started exploring, I was really taken aback by some of the things that can be done, both the absurd and the practical," Simpson said.
America could the double the 663,000 cops on the beat for 32 years. It could buy 16.6 million Habitat for Humanity houses, enough for 43 million Americans.
Now imagine investing that $1 trillion in the stock market _ perhaps a riskier proposition today than when Simpson finished the book _ to make it grow and last longer. He used an accepted long-term return on investment of 9 percent annually, with compounding interest.
The investment approach could pay for 1.9 million additional teachers for America's classrooms, retrain 4 million workers a year or lay a foundation for paying Social Security benefits in 65 years to every child born in the United States, beginning today.
It's too recent to make Simpson's list, but that $1 trillion could also have paid for the Bush administration's financial bailout plan, with $300 billion to spare. It might not be enough, however, to pay for the war in Iraq. Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz has recently upped his estimate of the war's cost to $3 trillion.
Simpson created a Web site companion to his book that lets you go virtual shopping with a $1 trillion credit card. Choices range from buying sports franchises to theme parks, from helping disabled veterans to polar bears.
Click on Air Force One, the president's $325 million airplane. The program asks: "Quantity?"
"At one point we couldn't find anybody who actually stuck with it long enough to spend $1 trillion," Simpson said. "It will wear you out." _________________________________________
Criminal acts of True Antiamericanism is Exactly what these Bushney,s and their McCain are Guilty of.........
I am hot_single_dude and I approve the message above
Word from a economist on Wall Street is that Obama plan is going to give every one of the 40% that don't pay taxes.......$19,000 per year.
$19,000 per year to 80 million (40% of 200m). If my math is right.....that is $1,520b per year. Our GNP last year......$1,500b
Does not sound like we will have very much left for your far left and socialism programs in Europe to fund, Dude.
Maybe time for you to see if Russia is willing to fund them. They are flush with petro dollars.
LOL........he is just buying votes. There is no honor in that. No direction of national purpose or real change that improves a country where their vote can be bought. Just offering to do it.....tells us about the man called Barak Obama.
He feels that the American public can be bought. That they place the $ before the country. That is Barak Obama. Or he would not propose this. He has so little respect for democracy and those have paid a ultimate price for it, that he can offer to buy the election with these socialist payoffs.
That is your Barak Obama and his assembled staff and managers.
ttom500: That is what socialism is all about at the beginning, Dude.
Changing to something that is different......going to make things better. Then comes the realization.......the world did not change with the mere change in a government or its new system. Same world that was there the day before the change, is there the day after the change.
In post WWI Russia......some initially wanted to go to democarcy. Then Lenin entered the scene....with about 1/2 of the Russia army that were in mutiny. Began to force Russians...wanting a change.....to advocate Communism. An entire war....between white Russia and red Russia was fought.
That is how far most Socialists will take thier revolution. To civil war.
That is why when Joe Biden was asked by the Central Florida reporter....the question on Carl Marx.....he ducked it. Why they will not even now respond to the station or grant an interview. Both Obama and Biden know....that if painted as socialist......this election is likely lost.
Yet here is the deal. Had Obama said to the Ohio Sect of State....it is in the Constitution....14th Admendment.....that the States are to supply a 'certified list' of voters for Presidential elections...then he could be claiming to stay within the Constitution. But he did not. He lets the OH charade of a Presidential election go on. That is exactly how a Socialist with no regard for the country, its constitution would act.
So I call him.....what he is a socialist.
You have completely run out of arguments Tom and it is now down to name-calling.
Calling him an Arab didn't work Calling him a Muslim didn't work Calling him a terrorist didn't work Calling him corrupt didn't work Calling him un-american didn't work Calling him unpatriotic didn't work
So now.....you are calling him socialist.
Is there any button you and your pals won't push to prevent the electorate from voting for Obama?
WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States is considering taking part in talks with elements of the Taliban in a sharp change in tactics in Afghanistan, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday citing unnamed officials.
"Senior White House and military officials believe that engaging some levels of the Taliban -- while excluding top leaders -- could help reverse a pronounced downward spiral in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan," the paper said on its website.
The report said the new approach was contained in a draft recommendation in a classified White House assessment of US strategy in Afghanistan. Talks would be led by the Afghan government, "but with the active participation of the US," it said.
The final White House recommendation is expected next month after the US presidential elections, the report said.
Earlier this month, Afghan officials met with former members of the Taliban government in talks in Saudi Arabia.
The Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan has grown steadily despite the presence of tens of thousands of international troops helping the Afghan security forces. There is consensus that the violence will not be ended solely through military means.
The Taliban ruled from 1996-2001 using a restrictive and extremist interpretation of Islam before being overthrown by US-led forces.
On October 8, General David Petraeus, incoming head of the US Central Command, said that attempts were being made to open talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Petraeus used a similar approach in Iraq, where a US drive to enlist Sunni tribes in the fight against Al-Qaeda in Iraq helped sharply reduce the country's violence.

Maybe he fixed the World Series?
Fallingman....if you read some of the earliest my earliest post on the Dude threads........I mentioned socialist several times in them. Then becayse Obama was virtually unknown.....I did not make a solid claim to it.
But had grave feelings of it months ago. Then.....after the Trinity Church and liberation theology was known......after Bill Ayers and the regineering education program that they jointly worked on was known.......after the Joe the plummer statement.......and now with Biden ducking the Carl Marx question......it all adds up does it not?
I exposed a online flag photo on his patriotism as being a ke. I have admitted he is a Christian. I question a connection with Tony RESKO as being coorupt.....Tony RESKO is jail for extortion and ribery...racteering charges. While in the debate on Hamas's endorsement of Obama.....terrorism might have been mentioned.....I don't think I accused him of being a terrorist.
But I do think after these months......that he is a socialist......else his programs would be different, his lack of concern on the voter fraud registeries, his long time relationship with Bill Ayers would not have occurred. And he would have been honest about it.
