I think expecting the world to change because of the color of ones skin is too generalized for me... I don't think that it will "change the world". I hope that people didn't base there decision on race... It does however open up a new door full of hope and change, It shows our children that anything is possible with hard work, dedication and confidence within yourself.
shot3743: Well obviously the critics of the USA will have to think again before spouting the same old stuff.
And I believe millions will believe that America is sincere, which is not the case right now.
It is a wonderful opportunity for the USA to change how people all over the world perceive the world's most powerful democracy.
I hope that Predient to be Obama doesn't not have to be 'tested' into making any hasty emergency decisions - the fact that he likes to listen to a wide range of views before he makes up his own mind does NOT make him weak...... quite the opposite in times of peace.
Let us hope that he heals wounds within the USA, and that also world leaders feel that he listens to their views too - and that he doesn't just enter international debate with pre-conceived ideas and just bully the rest of the world (including allies) into accepting his view.
He'll very soon have to make decisions that will not be good for everybody - let's just hope he makes decisions that are mostly good for both the USA and also for the rest of the world.
It would be wonderful to feel that the USA was a real PARTNER in the free world, and quit coming over as being dictatorial - however benign!

We're a republic...not a freakin democracy.
Contrary to belief, his job is to be president of the US, not the world.
trish123: I think we may have crossed wires here Rusty - I spent part of my teens on the streets selling the Socialist Worker newspaper and during my recent spell in uni (social sciences) many of my fellow students laughed at my left leaning tendencies - I more than agree with what you are saying above
OMG - I really cringed at the sad Socialist Workers selling their rag of a newspaer at Uni..... some friends and I got together and published a freebee newspaper called 'Capitalist Layabout' - however.....
I spent my third year studying in Denmark instead of the States (I was reading American Management Science but took the opportunity to study cute Danish pastries) and I was shocked that even a student working in a part-time job in a bar paid 50% income tax!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yet I saw zero poverty in Denmark, and housing was excellent. People had a real say in local government - they got involved as part of their value system as 'good citizens'. By law workers and management had to discuss serious issues that would affect employment. many well-known companies had been able to move manufacturing abroad without loss of employment locally - e.g. Eco moved the manufacture of shoe leathers to Malaysia while maintaining both design and finishing the product (i.e. putting the soles on the shoes) in Denmark.
I didn't work while I was there and felt impoverished compared to the other international students, but I didn't starve either.
It was, however, a little too bland for me - so many people cycling to work and being too modest if they were rich.
I do NOT like seeing poor people living in bad housing when I am better off - makes me feel kinda guilty for my good fortune in life........ I think there should be a small percentage of people in a balanced society and a few filthy rich people and a LARGE well-off middle class.......... societies that are skewed to having a large percentage of poor and rich people are not happy countries in my opinion.
The USA has recently seen a growth in the percentage of people considered poor, and also in those at the top of the heap......... it is the middle class of a society that needs to take up the majority of the distribution. When the 'middle classes' suffer the whole country begins to become less secure.
We need rich people able and willing to take risks to provide others with work. Our society unfortunately has to have a few poor people who suffer when the wind of change blows and they are unable to adapt quickly - a good society helps make sure that the small percentage of poor people are not trapped forever, and are given the opportunity to quickly rejoin the relatively affluent majority.
does everyone forget... he is also half white?.... Does it really matter his race? He is a man in a leadership position and we are all counting on him to do the best for our country. I back him as I would any President and will help him succeed in his vision for the world.
