These days those are very helpful. I don't speak any of them.
My daughter was applying for a job and asked me to look over her job application, knowing that my eagle eye would spot spelling mistakes etc.
What's this, I asked aghast:
"I speak and write fluent French"
Are you kidding, I said, I can just about make that claim after half a lifetime of hard slog? I knew for a fact that even after 6 years of French she would be able to order a coffee and a croissant in La Belle France, and that's about it.
Ah, don't worry, she said, you have to blow your trumpet, nobody else is gonna do it for you. Besides, everybody lies in their applications. You have to do it too, just to keep a level playing field. They don't check anyway. Do you think the guy reading this speaks French?
And what about this: Microsoft Word and Excel? Are you kidding me, Excel?
At that she grabbed her letter and rushed out the room. Big help you are, was her parting shot.
Uzbek (native), Russian, English. As far as Uzbek belongs to the family of Turkic languages I understand many of them them to, except Turkish and Azerbaijani, and I speak Russian well enough to understand some Slavonic languages...
English, primary. Had four years Spanish HS, straight A+'s
1 yrs High German in College C's one of my lowest scores (I still don't see how I was supposed to learn eveything heard for the first 15 yrs of life in one semester then everything heard for the rest of the natural life in the second semester )
Served as a international student tutor to help students from other countries in English during the summerof my Frosh year @ college, got assigned three Iraninan students, whom all told me I would learn their language to talk to them They spent the whole summer telling me No girl had any right to be in College We did hammer out a form of mixed language and I could understand them.
Am currently learning the language of that Special Guy

druidess6308: Besides English, I also speak passable German and American Sign Language. I used to speak Spanish and French fluently, but now I can only read French and swear in Spanish. Funny, I was fluent enough in Spanish a long time ago to speak it like a native, but now I can barely ask where the restrooms are...and German is getting rusty too since I have nobody to speak it with on a regular basis.
That is a shame to lose languages get books a pen pal what ever it takes but don't let it go!
