Memory Flash

'God bless' you cries the old man
And waves a weary wave
Old gnarly fingers
With cracked dirty nails

Slowly bends to pick up coins
Food there'll be tonight
And maybe more with bit of luck
A drink of cheap red wine

Shuffling off, a place in mind
A backward glance of setting sun
And memories buried of long ago
Come creeping to the front

The band it plays a welcome home
Uniform crisp, medals shine
Marching, marching home we are
And a ticker tape parade

He shakes his head and a tear falls
So long, so long, so long ago
Who remembers, who even cares
Of all the sacrifices

The head droops and memory fades
Replaced by present needs
Food there'll be tonight
And drink of cheap red wine
