The Stars

When I was young I'd stand at night
And to the stars I'd gaze
What wonders out there must there be
I'd wish to fly up there

I'd leave behind this earthly home
And to far off stars I'd travel
Alien sights and extraterrestrials
My life a far ranging excursion

But then as older I did grow
And then had wife and family
The thought of leaving all behind
To bear was not so easy

Alien sights gave way to joy
Of seeing my children grow
The pleasures found in daily life
Overshadowed the unknown

So now mid age I stand at night
And to the stars I gaze
All around me have grown up
And drifted far apart

But now a new life I have started
And things so very different
New directions I'll be heading
Out there I'll not be travelling

Again I wonder what's out there
What mysteries await
Is there life, different from us
One day we might find out
