The Lover

The World calls her a slut;-
In reality, she's a High Priestess.
Not seeking the World's riches
She burns as she finds.

The World calls him a player
In reality, he is a man on the Road.
Being made Whole
By the kindness of a stranger.

What the common people think
Means nothing to their Quest.

It is only kindness and understanding
That brings them together.

A Circle is being made complete.

This is a Higher Love.

Caroleen

At twenty-four, and living by the beach
Mired in sadness I heard the ocean's roar.
The girl I loved once - now she's out of reach; -
(Restless waves haunt my longing for evermore).
Why this bitterness? And what could it teach?
(And all I feel is hurt at my heart's core).
To take my mind off things I go out drinking -
So I'm sitting in a pub at Dee Why* thinking.

Saturday night and each sip of my drink numbs -
To give me just a few hours to forget.
Like the froth on schooners** sorrow overruns -
The sour cold ale as bitter as my regret.
To alcohol, my pain at last succumbs
(I grow lost in memory and introspect).
Though it seems true - as I grow more forlorn -
That things are always "darkest before the dawn".

And strangely now I see a girl walk in
Into the pub, and looking slightly lost;-
Her clothes expensive, and her body thin; -
(I want to talk to her but not accost).
I see her find a table and settle in -
She seems lonely somehow, and her face downcast.
A few drinks later I conquer my shyness -
I walk up to her and compliment her dress.

After some small talk, we exchanged our names
(It seemed that she was glad of the company).
Here I go again, playing lover's games -
(That's how it was that she now came to join me).
Of such situations, I am not ashamed -
(And looking closer she was quite a beauty).
I told her "your the prettiest girl I've seen"
When I asked her name - she told me - "Caroleen".

That night I held - for our hearts - an inquest -
And all her naked beauty came undone.
She lets me be her white knight in this conquest;-
(The next day we'd watch the newly rising Sun).
Our love was guiltless - this I now attest -
(I guess that night we both needed someone).
Here again - another girl - and circumstance; -
Every situation diff'rent for romance.

I put some music on - It was Chris Isaak -
I touched her hair - the darkest of brunette; -
Then after half an hour in my flat,
We're in bed; - (memories I won't soon forget).
Bright moonlight fell athwart the window slats
(And made her seem more beautiful still yet).
Passions rise and two souls must now mingle -
Better by a thousand times than single.

The next morning we walked along the beach
And sunshine's liquid light played on the waves.
My hand caressed her face - as soft as peach -
(I guess we both got what we truly craved).
If only for one night then - each to each -
(I'm lucky on a list her name I've saved).
Looking seaward she said: "fish are caught in nets"
Like a lover's heart perhaps? - without regrets.

To all the Girls

To all the girls I've been with - here's to you
To every little whimsy of our hearts -
For true lovers only - there's been a few
Who made me die inside when we're apart.
Seldom did I find it - a love that's true
Too quickly did most women then depart
Swirling in the chaos of young lives
Our soul's hunger for experience survives.

To all the girls I've been with - and will miss
For every fickle fancy of our souls
Every little moment and stolen kiss
Something to remember as hearts grow cold.
I only have my muse - and here's to this :
Experience to cherish as I grow old; -
To the good ones and the bad ones and the tarts -
And to the precious few who broke my heart.

For all the girls I've loved - I hope again
To find exquisite feeling one more time -
I've felt the kiss in summer of soft rain
It made my spirit want more soar and climb.
I want love's elation - this to retain -
And replace a heartache now - to feel sublime;-
I kiss my lover sent from up above -
To find and hold again that special love.

Robyn (The Cougar)

Once when I was twenty-two a cougar
Did take me in to be her special cub.
If only for a week - it was sweet sugar
(When I was young I could not get enough).
So rolling every night we in the sheets were -
In Newtown at your house (well life is tough).
Education owes a debt of gratitude -
Though best not to read on if you're a prude.

Drinking in a cocktail bar at midnight -
The loving in your eyes - a soft mystique.
If drinking's loneliness - then I am right: -
Why you're drinking by yourself down on King Street.
Sometimes a little courage for delight
In my young breast were butterflies (shall we meet?)
Something I now plead with every breath -
Beg for a chance - and for that little death.

Our fingers interlace - we find a joy
You push me down reclining on your couch
Cupid must his arrows now deploy
(I find my fingers quickly heading South).
Lovers should not in public this way toy
(It's lucky we are both now at your house).
I find another love now to replace -
You're lying in my arms now at your place.

You want it once - you want it fast and fancy -
The strength of both our needs now overcomes; -
You well over forty - with sophistry -
Seducing this young man - lust overruns.
The static in the air - our chemistry -
Newtown's summer night now in your arms.
Angel's wings now hide their eyes - and the reason?
Love had blossomed hot within its season.

A week now under your spell - love's duress -
A grace of destiny though furthermore.
I immortalize affection's hot caress -
I had you once - then I could not keep score.
Its good for the soul (they say) to confess
(If only for a week I now write for).
T'was something sweet - for all its brevity; -
After this, we parted - most amicably.

You say that nothing good can come of this?
(Now as we throw our caution to the wind).
Though what I felt that week was close to bliss
(As close I think as I shall ever find).
Words can speak no more - it's in your kiss -
The truest words 'ere spoken "love is blind"
So Robyn - here for you - my memory -
Enshrines our love now in this poetry.

Girl at a Bus Stop

I was walking home
with the Sunday paper -
got tired
sat down.

A few seats up
from you
blonde girl.

I am shy -
you crossed
your legs
towards
me.

Sunglasses
like black coals
on your face.

Frizz of blonde hair
tousled in the wind.

The echo of sky
big blue sky
Sunday afternoon.

But I am shy
and couldn't talk.
I missed my chance.

So many broken dreams
around here.

Women

Women - that's why I write poems about them
Because they drive me crazy.
To remember everything thats happened
Before memory is hazy.

All I can do is think of memories made
To treasure each moment of sweet seduction.
Oasis in a desert are each maid
(Though the logic would seem non-existent).

Now experiences go tinkling like glass
Through the infinite;-
To be made a part of memories
On love's sandy beach.

The infinite, the abyss
Perhaps just a blind chance;-
Crevice of ice - long for that kiss -
Or if you'd love to dance that all-night dance.

The outer essence
Which hides the package within;-
This evanescence
Where time outlasts our sin.

Lisa

Drinking Saturday night - Arncliffe* Hotel
The usual crowd set out to drink their fill,
I was amongst them doing this as well
(Like so many pigs at their yeasty swill).
Though drinking is its special brand of hell
It's something that I will do sometimes still.
I was alone indulging in my sin
When suddenly (it seemed) that love walked in.

Insensible of this I saw her not
In my own little world so unaware.
Alone with my thoughts in polyglot
Just drinking at my table sitting there.
Poets - sometimes - they talk a lot of rot
And go some places that you wouldn't dare.
I was twenty five, and this was long ago -
Memories are cold now - like a drift of snow.

An innocent request - a game of pool
(She didn't need to ask me twice) I said:
"Of course my dear Sydney one shot rules"
(She had designs on taking me to bed).
I could see it in her eyes - like sparkling jewels -
And sense it on her pouting lips of red.
Although neither of us was very chaste
Sometimes its nice to be the one whose chased.

One thing lead to another (so you see)
"Your mine tonight" (she told me more than once).
Events I now recall in poetry:
(In these kind of situations one must pounce
Or miss forever opportunity).
I slowed my drinking of the fluid ounce
(To let her catch up now in her imbibing) -
And marveled at my luck; - it was surprising.

Before I go on now I best describe
This damsel of the night from long ago.
The compass of her beauty circumscribed
In this my muse (good reader) for you now.
Her hair was dark brunette, her hips were wide
An hourglass figure, and fuzzy down below.
Her skin was white - like the stone alabaster -
When I asked her name - she told me - it was Lisa.

Why hang around in pubs with such strange girls?
We didn't stay there long (needless to say).
And like a love match was this game of pool
To serve a purpose - this was our foreplay.
Her hair was long in ringlets and in curls -
(We felt the spark that night - our chemistry).
And luckily (for me) she lived not far -
Who says you can't find beauty in a bar?

A Woman Is

A Woman is
Eternal mystery.

See through
The heart
Of Man
In one
Swift glance.

Can you remember this
Men - in your vanity?

All that we know
in our history
Has happened
When a woman
Took a chance.

Without a woman
Man is incomplete.

All that we know
In our profanity.

My soul
My veins
My blood
Because of her.

When Music Speaks

When music speaks, it speaks unto the heart; -
Where poet's words may fail, music talks.
When two lovers; - they are so far apart
Fine music now to bridge that farthest walk.
It's something that I know before we part; -
And something that may make the staunchest balk.
You say that money talks; - it's treachery -
The sole haven of the weak - in lechery.

When music speaks, the soul it now awakes; -
(It's something that we cannot quite explain).
Gods have left us to our various fates
(And time will leave but few there to remain).
History will remember those few greats
(Like the gentle kiss of seasons in Spring rain).
Byron knew this, and so did Shakespeare -
They trod the ground to walk where others fear.

And poetry, it seems, is a lost art
Something, maybe now, from a bygone age.
Woman I have loved - now we're far apart
(And remembered they, only on my page).
When I was young I thought I was so smart
The older that I get, more life it's strange.
I long for bygone times - where poetry
Would tell my lover of sincerity.

The Right Girl

One day I'll find the right girl
She will be my one and only.
If I have to search half the World
Then I'll be no longer lonely.

I know my wants, and my dreams
For my heart's desire.
If love is true then it seems
To burn like hottest fire.

Good looks may run a distant last
To what she has inside;-
The superficial has long past
And my heart could never hide.

What is this World without love?
It's empty and it's hollow; -
Oh to find that treasure trove
That gives meaning to tomorrow.
