Well, I am just saying .if someone does something stupid and knows there is a risk. they deserve what they get. I just saw a guy playing with a venomous snake and knew that the antidote was over 300 miles away. He was on an island and the venom kills within an hour. That was pretty dumb and he deserved it..lol

absolutely. That is the only thing that works without a doubt and we see a proof of it every day. All people who have survived until now, you and me are the fittest in the evolution until this moment, selected and special. Not all of them who live now will survive and leave their gens in new generations, there comes new generations of chosen survives. The fittest in a person who is good enough to adapt and survive in given circumstances, with means that are given to her/him. Each and everyone has his own combination of life strategies which work for that individual, some of it they will pass to new generation. We are all the result of evolution and it’s still going on. The fittest can be a “weak” person but who knows how to ask things, a person living on welfare, a wife living of her husband, a very ill disabled person who still lives(maybe also inspires other people with his example), also a nun and a thief, a religious maniac and a serial killer. They all develop a life strategy that works for them. Bad and good are needed to each other and help to polish species further, through obstacles we get better and stronger, those who can’t cope lose this war for survival.
I wonder if those who´ve voted yes have ever taken antibiotics or had surgery or given it to their children???
Because survival of the fittest means pretending pediatricians, doctors, homeopaths and surgeons don´t exist and letting whatever ails you (or a loved) "do its thing" (apart from may be using natural herbs).
I´d have died in labour with my first one if surgery hadn´t been invented. And probably she would have too!

There is probably more about survival than just fitness. Fit person may be plain unlucky and not that fit person may have good luck and survive long. Some unfit are more cautious and live long, some very fit and adventurous die young in accidents. Cooperation also is known to enhance survival - say a friendly group helping each other have better survival chances than a warring one.

Survival of the fittest doesn't mean doing without all the modern technology that is helping us live longer lives. It's just a fact that even with all this good stuff, as we age our bodies are less able to fend off the nasties that have been floating around. Things we could fight off in our younger days, now throw us for a loop. Unfortunately, I guess it's just a fact of life.

I see where you are coming from but think about it from a different persepctive. In nature, survival of the fittest is all around you. Plants and animals that can't adapt to their environment die off (become extinct). It's difficult for plants to move to a new location but for animals they can move to another location. Another example would be to look at animals that travel in packs or herds. This could be a bit of a stretch but it can work. The weakest (old and sick) and youngest are typically the ones that get killed by predators. Why? Becasue they are easier to catch. If you want to use humans, think about college students. When a student starts college for the very first time (traditional age in the US is ~18), many don't make it past the first year. There are probably just as many that don't make it past the first semester. What's my point? If first time college students don't adapt to the college life, then they won't make it and they will flunk out of college. It's about balancing the social and academic aspects of college. Again, I do see your point but people did die before the current medical technology came about (since the early 1900s).

the fittest among people is NOT the physically strongest or that who is never ill All those who can use the means offered them for survival are the fittest, all who survive are the fittest, each and everyone has his OWN way

this is not about the fitness. "Survival of the fittest" is a phrase originating in evolutionary theory, as an alternative description of natural selection. if a someone has good social skills it would help him to survive as well.

When was the last time you read the now latest volume of the winners of the Darwin Awards (www.DarwinAwards.com), the "volumes commemorating individuals who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it in a sublimely idiotic fashion." New edition is just out...
I think survival of the fittest is nature's way. The instincts are still in us to prefer mates who give off signals of physical health. Of course since we don't hunt for food anymore, physical health today is increased by mental prowess. (If you can earn money, you can afford better health care/food/rest time, etc). Of course we have added "ethics" to the mix, since we're such an enlightened species, and we now take care of people who would normally not survive (disability payments, social security, welfare, mental health care, etc.).
amahlala: If survival of the fittest were true, why are there so many idiots roaming the earth?
Because of the welfare state, which allows the unfit to survive to reproductive age. Also, religions such as Christinsanity, which glorify weakness and failure. "The meek shall inherit the Earth." WTF!
