mtncabingirl: so many places in the world to visit but some are smaller, easier to travel through.if you only had a week, where would you go in the u.s.
On my first visit to the U.S. was in '96. I headed straight for New York, something I had wanted to do for years. Gotta say that the first night seeing Broadway during one of their worst garbage strikes, was a rude awakening!
But that soon disappeared. Love NY. I returned in '99. Still use the cookie cutters and apron, plus baby loaf tins, all from Zabars on Broadway.
Wow! I'm afraid I would want to do everything! Have always wanted to visit New York, New Orleans and San Francisco, plus Washington State, Route 66, see a Chris Isaak concert, go horse riding in Montanna etc etc etc! Waaaaaaaaaaay too much for 1 week's worth!!

I have already been at the States but was younger if you ask me now Id love to go visit GREAT friends, so the week you are telling us wont be enough for me, Id have to go to Miami, New Orleans, Texas, Arizona... maybe a NBA/NFL game and a concert could do the job for a week or Hawaii lmao
Ive been to the States many times and lived in Fla for a year. If I was going to choose an American vaca I would drive the PCH and tour the vineyards in California
I would find a empty river bank with a train trestle in view, pull out the guitar and play some music till I saw the train cross....then climb that trestle and follow the tracks for awhile. ;-}

Hi, Niko! That sounds like a great start for a poem or a song...or even a movie....nice visual.

I've been wine tasting here in California several times and always have a blast. Was in Napa this time last year and had an awesome time and the weather was perfect.

Spoiled kid! I did it all by hitch-hiking back through the 60's then by working across the old south in the 70's as a free-lance photographer...just one of many ways...

Off to new york first and I would last about a day with all the hustle and bustle and then off to see cape canavral to see the space centre, I would give anything to go see the space shuttles going off to space.
My first visit to the US was 1992. I traveled to New York, LA, Santa Barbara,Grand Canyon, then onto Boston to warm up an ole girl friend and finally back home. There months later I moved to New York for eleven years so I guess it made a good first impression on me!

Yep...I spent half my adult life travelling/working my way around the British Isles. It's was a great experience and one I will never forget. Wanted to work on the Great Lakes too, but didn't have the money to get out there...that's the only drawback to getting work like that... the pay is so low. I too hitch-hiked all over the place(plus cycled and walked) Got it down to a fine art!

I spent half my adult life travelling/working my way around the British Isles! Loved every minute of it - it was a fantastic experience. Also hitch-hiked all over the place. It was really easy, and I met some great people en route. Other than that, I cycled and walked my way all over the country. Wanted to work on the tourist boats on The Great Lakes too, but the trouble with casual work like that is that it pays virtually nothing, so unfortunately I never did have the money to get out there.
Godsgift: Rocky Mountains for me. Denver Colarado sounds wonderful. Like Scotland but bigger and higher. Oh and take the steam train journey too.
if you want scotland here - try western virginia (NOT west virginia) and Kentucky - beautiful mountains, beautiful states, very rural, and many scots settled apalachia
I can't answer this for I have been to the US many times. First time was to Seattle. Second time to Hell and Butt,...oops,...Helena and Butte, MT. New York? Everything they said it was going to be and more!!! Mardi Gras in LA? Lordy, lordy,...one does not forget that experience soon!! New England states in the fall? Unbelieveable! And hell, I barely noticed the trees!
The US is overloaded with scenery, but first and foremost, I find them to be an amazing bunch of people! Ever so glad to have them as neighbors (but hey,...really,...enough with the "aboot" jokes! Eh? LOL!)

For those who don't know, the PCH is the Pacific Coast Highway in California, also known as Highway 1.
Me, too, but unfortunately Route 66 has been broken up into so many sections that it is now impossible to really drive the whole route as it used to be. It looked the current route, and you would go crazy keeping track of all the detours.
I live in the US and have absolutely no desire to see any of the major cities. Pittsburgh, PA and Cleveland, Ohio are far to big for me. I think small town America is a much more appealing vacation. My suggestion to visitors from other countries... try a tour of antebellum plantations in the south. Or just plain small town America. This is the best way to get the feel of what real American life is like.

I guess it depends on what a person seeks. I am from another country yet have had wonderful experiences in the US be it in small town (just a handful of people) to a metropolis like NY City! It is really no different wherever you go,....some people go to France to experience Paris whereas others go into the countryside into small villas to experience what that has to offer. What it all really boils down to, at least for me, is what I want to see, and the people that I meet! Real American life can be found anywhre in America,...its all a matter of perspective and what it is you seek! JMHO!
