Since that particular thread is the thread starters they should make a request that the posters stick to the topic of that particular topic.
Im guilty with this one,i would say it happen accidentaly it wasnt my intention to hijack thread ,i rarely post on serious topic to avoid misunderstanding,.
It is most frustating when a thread gets hijacked for a senseless. chit chat. I am a big supporter of freedom of expression, but there are places where these people can chat. I will suppress those irrelavent comments and if they persist with it I will block them; without feeling guilty.
It would be wrong though to take such action to suppress opinions you don't like.

If a thread has become hijacked because posters are concerned for each other's welfare, or discomfort, it would be churlish to ban them from supporting each other.
If a sub-thread had appeared as a direct result of your question, its your responsibility as the thread author to feed the topic back into the original question, if it already hasn't been. Off-shoots are about exploration of the original topic and are an important part of understanding a topic thoroughly. I love them and there are 50 pages to fill.
As the thread author its your responsibility to guide the thread in the direction you want. If you create a thread and offer very little input after that, its not overly rational to get upset if things are being discussed that you don't want discussed.
Banning people? I've never done it myself. I think its for very extreme cases when you're unable to control the thread yourself with your own posts.
Hiding posts? That just makes people curious and they can open them all and read them anyway. Usually when people go down this route its misused and the thread author ends up looking spiteful, or strange.
If my thread had lots of discussion, offshoots, exploration, learning, fun, laughter and posters attending to and caring for each other's needs, I'd be so proud and happy. It would be quite an achievement.
I would re-direct the discussion or start another post if that does not work. However, if it hasn't worked maybe people are more interested in the way the thread has gone rather than the original?

ban the poster if you think it's a troll , wouldn't ban another member for a difference of opinion though . National past time reading hidden posts . Leave em up and have a crack at the troll as if you ban em thet can't say nothing .
Do you mean that posters are posting posts that have nothing to do with the subject of the thread?
Or do you mean that they are about the subject of the thread but you don't like/agree with the posts?
There's a significant difference between these two. One being a fair concern, and the other being the petty power plays of handwringing despots, the like we're oh so accustomed to on CS.

I've just checked your profile and I realise you're currently offline, but using the quote button and responding directly to other posters is the cyber equivalent of looking someone in the eye.
It helps with the social interaction, bonding in friendship and controlling the atmosphere of your own thread.
i enjoy the offshoots that occur with some threads. i think these happen more frequently when the OP does not take responsibility to manage the thread. if it is bothering the OP, they should make a kind direction/suggestion back to original post to facilitate a more focused exchange. most folks on here are not intentionally trying to hijack the thread..and will get back on track or leave the thread.
but yanno...it's through those sidebars, that i have met and made several good friendships.

A thread is initiated by an O/P - opening poster. This site is moderated by the Mods - Moderators. Hiding posts does nothing except invite people to open them, so it doesn't do a bit of good to hide posts. Banning members for getting off topic? Why? Think of the forums as a meeting room, where we are happy and delighted to re-connect with one another and sure, we may all go off on other topics, but you can be sure that the core of the thread is still there. Just go with the fun, have fun, don't fuss over the small stuff.
Now, if someone gets rude, abusive, and is obviously just trying to distrupt things, we can report that person to the Mods. Doesn't mean anything will be done about it, but again, it's all small stuff really.

Up to you, but I would remind about the topic of the forum, like a chairman of a meeting. Our attention spans sometimes are not long enough, and we get carried away, ha ha!
