MrRick77: Should English be the spoken language of the world ?
I am sorry I am not understanding your English? Do you mean the primary language or a mutual language that all speak? There are many countries that where ever you go many speak English. It seems quite a few in other countries speak English. I have seen some here searching for the a word because some times we call things different words even when we all speak the same language French fries, shrimp....also when I have hosted people from other countries even the English speaking countries I have found that they seem amazed at the choices we have at the grocery stores. Along with a few other cultural shocks for the out of towners I myself would like to learn more languages. In my area we have quite a few Spanish speaking people and when I speak Spanish they seem so impressed and it is thru others encouragement that my vocabulary has grown. So I in turn try to remember when I come across someone who struggles speaking English to be patient and encouraging. I think in a way you would call that "paying it forward."
MrRick77: Should English be the spoken language of the world ?
Most definitely. And we should ban every other language and invade any country that doesn't speak English as its first language in 5 years. After the invasions we should shoot on sight anybody speaking any other language than English.

Fair enough just make it valid for native speakers as well.

Obscuritan: Well all languages have different accents and some different words. English certainly isn't unique in that respect. Take Spanish and Mexican - big differences - so I'm told. And I can understand Dutch, but Flemish..... only with difficulty!
Spanish is a language while Mexican is a nationality yet the Spanish spoken in Mexico is different to the Spanish in other places.

What about a second, third, etc language?
Many people speak more than one language.
For example: there are about 10,000,000 Chinese people that speak English. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_English-speaking_population

abcWOMAN: I guess MrRick would be totally confused if he'd have to deal with two languages!!
I do not think people need languages to be confused.
On the topic:
"...Several factors correlate with English ability. Wealthy countries do better overall. But smaller wealthy countries do better still: the larger the number of speakers of a country's main language, the worse that country tends to be at English. This is one reason Scandinavians do so well: what use is Swedish outside Sweden? It may also explain why Spain was the worst performer in western Europe, and why Latin America was the worst-performing region: Spanish's role as an international language in a big region dampens incentives to learn English...."
CuddlingSoul: English is the best written language for business, documents, contracts, etc, but all of the languages in the world should exist as part of a country's heritage and right.
I can basically agree with this. I do think a country's historic language should predominate and those who immigrate need to learn it. So many dialects are spoken in the US in ENGLISH that it is hard enough to understand those with out having to deal with other languages.

I know this about that, there's no way in hell for the Latino's to learn proper English living here in Alabama and true Miss, I believe the Latino's kind-of give-up on learning English because of the dialects. As far as I know, there is no official redneck dictionary for the masses.

It might be different in AlObama but the U.S. Census Bureau indicates:
53 million The Hispanic population of the United States as of July 1, 2012,
37.6 million The number of U.S. residents 5 and older who spoke Spanish at home in 2011. This is a 117 percent increase since 1990 when it was 17.3 million. Those who hablan español en casa constituted 12.9 percent of U.S. residents 5 and older. More than half of these Spanish speakers spoke English "very well."
Education 63.2% The percentage of Hispanics 25 and older that had at least a high school education in 2011.
13.2% The percentage of the Hispanic population 25 and older with a bachelor's degree or higher in 2011.
3.7 million The number of Hispanics 25 and older who had at least a bachelor's degree in 2011.
1.2 million Number of Hispanics 25 and older with advanced degrees in 2011 (e.g., master's, professional, doctorate). ..... Serving Your Country 1.2 million The number of Hispanics or Latinos 18 and older who are veterans of the U.S. armed forces.
Businesses 2.3 million The number of Hispanic-owned businesses in 2007, ----

Actually English is not a good language in its written form, it is too easy to misinterpret and can be very ambiguous, which is why, in Europe, written documents are almost always written in French, as written french has a very clear meaning and easily understood with no mistakes.
MrRick77: Should English be the spoken language of the world ?
Wouldn't go that far but if people come to an English speaking country like where I live it's up to them to learn and be fluent in it before coming here.
