I said goodbye to my dear old car on Friday, the cost of repairs made it a no brainer. I'm lucky to live in a handy location where I can cycle, walk or catch a bus to where I need to go.
Haven't driven the car for 3 months and have no intention of replacing it for the foreseeable future .. maintenance, registration and fuel costs are through the roof here and I'm more than happy to give all that a miss.
Plus the bonus of getting more exercise and helping the environment

sweetiefireball: ahh...we have all gone thru this...i think....
Keep fixing it, might as well run it into the ground. A new car is nice to have when the time comes, but I have never found them to be a good investment.
you could get that crappy winz for oil additive or radiator stop leak just to get it sold or trade it on Craigslist ...and get some thing that hasn't got blown head gaskets ....

Cripes... I tip my hat to you Noeleena...
my reply was to junk it...!!
which I happily do.. trade it for new... because I don't have the background nor the inclination to look under a bonnet..
I just like clean and good working order.. I have to be able to get from home to work and back again without worrying...
Drive it to the ground but at some point you will have to junk it. Remmember if it cost $1000 to fix it and only $250 to tow it to the scrap yard you will still get $100 back in scrap metal. But don't drive a unsafe car.
