If could have phrased it (without sounding "clunky") to something like "How long have you gone without doing it twice in the same year"... it would have been a lot longer for me.

IMHO...if ya went for more than 6 months...and according to this survey no one went without between 6 months and 1 year... then I'd say there's a bunch of ex-convicts answering the survey.....or quite a few people who have experienced some serious problems. It just isn't normal or natural from what I've experienced or observed. If this survey is accurate for divorced or widowed people...I wonder what the gap there indicates...what it means? Could it be a healing period? A time of reflection? The time people take to search for their next partner?
