They should have really given that Guy the benefit of the Doubt! He is so obviously a Patsy,it isn't funny! Wonder how big a Shipment gone through, while they were busy with him? Classical way of doing things by the Cartels. Sacrifice a Shipment, and while they, the Authorities,or some of them are busy, send the Whopper through, then retrieve the sacrificed Shipment from corrupt Officials later! Wonder where those 9lbs of "Confiscated" Heroin are now!
If someone takes the risk of smuggling drugs into a country i assume they know the penalties if they get caught, so if they are prepared to take that risk, and are of sound mind then yes I do.

In the case of the guy that has just been executed, if there is proof that he did have mental health issues, then i do think that should have been explored and compassion shown
It is very simple, if you are knowingly carrying drugs into a country then you will know the penalty if you get caught, the reason for drug smuggling is profit, you know the risks involved and make a choice.

Exactly Conrad, how many other mules got through the customs that day eh, I wonder.

in ireland all u get is 15 years for murder but ull get out after 10 years pff and the kill a poor man over a few kgs unbelaveable
Personally I do not agree with what happened to this man and I have to think he was indeed mentally unbalanced to even attempt to take Heroin into China, of all places! Theres a long history of the Chinese trying to stamp out this drug.
I hate all that the heroin trade represents personally but I also hate the death penalty, especially when there are alternatives. He could have simply been deported to face trial here in England.
It is not about entering a country or whatever. It is the life of a human being or many, he is violating. Putting them to trash. The drug pusher is an abuser of the society. My opinion is to execute them along those child molestors and rapists.
What I think is neither here nor there, If you smuggle into a country where the death penalty is law for doing that, you should be prepared to take the consequences.

Exactly, I have no scientific basis, but my question is, how can the death sentence NOT act as a deterrent??....if you are prepared to commit a crime, and you know it carries the death sentence, then accept the consequences if you are caught. It's so simple.
sassysuzy: yes line them up and shoot the lot of them, what if it was your child killing himself with Heroin that they'd got him hooked on?
This stance has been debated here as much as "does size really matter"and I always say the same ....it is easy to sit in front of your computer and say "Kill them all" but are you willing to pull the trigger to do so...and if you are what does that really say about you as a person ,father/mother,..as a human being....

Myself i think they should be let deal with him and teach the others that drugs destroy the lives of many. Yes I agree that there are things, times and people who will need interventions but not this guy in china. He is found with 4kg of cocaine so he must pay the price accourding to the laws of that country.
In their defence, the Chinese have reportedly said that there was no evidence that the guy was mentally incapable, otherwise they would have shown him the compassion requested.
There are some hard line judicial systems in the world, particularly where drug smuggling is concerned. China is one of them. It so happens that the penalty there is death, so that is what happened.
Lets not forget that the death penalty for certain crimes is still on the books in over 50 other countries - including USA, Saudi, Japan, Pakistan etc - and it was only abolished completely here in the UK 12 years ago. In fact the EU statute prohibits the death penalty, and this is causing some consternation with certain countries wishing to join the EU.
Like Conrad says, its sad that this guy is so obviously a patsy and has paid the price whilst the real 'shipment' is probably on the street now.
But there is so much publicity about drug smuggling, so many cases that make the news, you would have to be completely stupid to attempt to smuggle drugs through conventional borders. Perhaps that in itself is the evidence that the Chinese needed..

This site makes interesting reading and shows that there are more unlawful murders in States within the US that have the death penalty, than there are murders in States that dont have.

Yes the death penalty is in the States......but not all states it is in fact mandated by state law ,not federal law....Texas I believe has a death pently ....however New York at this time does not (it has in the past however)... This however in my eyes does not make it right...

thats right Vinny there have been many studies here that show that the death sentance does not stop crime...in fact it may even make it worst... And how are you ole' boy
