lifeisadream: There are some treatments to diminish the reactions to the allergens but they are expensive and to identify what the persons are allergic to is painful.

What ever it is said here will change not a thing in real life but we get to know people's hearts here and then decide who we want to relate to.

what we have to make sure is that schools are prepared to handle an emergency in case of "peanuts" or any other allergy like a bee's venom, etc...
And shall members be afraid to give their honest opinions because they will be judged as not having a good a heart, simply because they don't think or feel, at least for the moment, the way you think they oughta? Dandy, yes?

I am never afraid to speak for what a feel, believe or stand for and when you have a good heart, what ever comes from you has to be good for yourself and for the others (or the other way around).

No, Rohaan.

It just seems odd to me that something so small as people asking a community to be careful about what they put in their kids' sandwiches are accused of being extremists, because the next thing you know this catastrophy, or that catastrophy will happen.

Who are the extremists here?

yabbadabbadont: Hi Merri....

Exciting time for you and your grand-daughter....

I think it was cool that our school took a stand and decided on a peanut free zone....It also teaches the other children about empathy and consideration for others...

It really teaches the children that everyone is FORCED to make a change to accommodate the one. That they have to give up what they like. Whether they want to or not.
Just another way to indoctrinate our children.

_LoVe_BuG_:
Honestly, I am glad that I am amongst the compassionate parents who respect & care about another child's right to inclusion & normalcy by making a few small changes at home.

But the changes in this case were not at home. They are at a PUBLIC school.
Should there be a peanut ban at the local PUBLIC park?
What about other local PUBLIC events and places?
Peanut allergies affect a very small percentage of children. It is wrong to FORCE the rest of us to accommodate them.
The parents need to take on the responsibility of making sure their kids are not placed in a dire situation.
I think it is very irresponsible and just plain ridiculous that the parents are putting their child in this situation.

I would never be afraid to give my opinions, and should someone wish to judge me as cruel, heartless and as if I want to euthanize their children and use them as sandwich spread,as was suggested, then that's their problem, not mine.I am not the one who would send a child with a deadly allergy into a place where they would be in constant danger after all.

_LoVe_BuG_: Obviously that would be something a wee bit harder to control & is absolutely ridiculous that you would use that as an example when there is no comparison! Peanuts in a school can be controlled! Sun cannot!

Exposure to peanuts in the world in some form or another in the world, school included can only be controlled to a degree. There are still many ways they can be put in danger.

In response to: Again, another example that cannot even compare!
It is peanuts we are talking about & asking parents not to send peanut products & wash their hands before going to school!!
Honestly, I am glad that I am amongst the compassionate parents who respect & care about another child's right to inclusion & normalcy by making a few small changes at home.

Of course they can be compared. Both are life threatening as well as life altering.I wasn't comparing them as diseases, but more the restrictiveness and degrees of danger to the afflicted.

I am not speaking about mild peanut allergies, but those that will kill a child within minutes of eating, touching or even smelling the peanuts.Obviously in a perfect world all little children would remember to wash their hands, mouth and any possessions they may of touched, but this not being a perfect world they will forget and they will bring danger to a child with a peanut allergy so severe that it will kill them.

It's a personal thing but I would rather have my child alive then constantly placing them in dangers way.

Didn't we have this very discussion about 7-8 pages back???

and FYI, my daughter goes to a private school, but yet, I pay taxes for PUBLIC schools..how fair is that, is it anymore fair for a taxpayer with a child within the public school system to have to not expect to be accommodated, we pay taxes just like you do, but your rights are MORE important????

I pay taxes it because it's required by law to pay property tax if you own a home and income taxes if you work, that money goes into PUBLIC schools and if that's where my child was to be educated, yes, you darn right I'd expect for her needs to be met, not only through education, but ALL areas. Are your kids better than more or more entitled than mine? No, they're sure not...they are equal in my eyes.

If your child had a special need and had to have special dietary or health allotments made to be able to go to school and be safe, you darn right I'd respect it, because it's the RIGHT thing to do.

It's not an inconvenience to me, it doesn't HURT me and it's to BENEFIT the child/children involved and there's nothing I wouldn't do to help a kid in need, but I guess that's just in my nature.

So because my daughter doesn't even attend a public school WHY do I have to pay taxes for your child's education??? See where I'm going with this?? You don't want kids with allergies in the public school system for fear your kids might be missing out on some peanut products, so I send my kid to a private, smaller school, but yet, my tax $$$ still benefit your kids..and you don't give a crap about mine.

I agree, it's virtually impossible to prevent ALL products containing peanuts from entering a school, but it could be very easily limited.

It's one thing for a big greasy Republican to stuff a half dozen fatburgers down his neck every day, then die of a heart attack because of it. I'm fine with that, it's his/her lifestyle choice.

It's when they send their kid to school with peanut butter and fried chicken sandwiches for lunch, then that kid decides he wants to give another kid with an allergy a nugy, because he's different, he puts someone's life in jeopardy.

Would you send a kid to school with a loaded handgun?

I'm sure someone will be screaming that they have a constitutional right to bear arms, and that that "other kid" was likely a tree hugging Liberal anyway, so god was punishing him/her by giving them an allergy.roll eyes

I don't have kids, but I do have a nephew that is deathly allergic to peanuts.

Maybe some people would understand the gravity of this issue a little better if they were to witness one of their loved ones, gasping for what could possibly be their last breath.

I have, and it's a terrifying situation to be in.

He's going on 7 now, and has a very good idea of what to avoid, but at 3/4 years old, he didn't.

There you go again. A loaded hangun is designed to kill people indiscriminately. Peanuts are a source of protein to most people and not intended for harm. These wild flights of imagination do not support any arguements.

Again, do we stop manufacturing motor vehicles because a certain percentage of the population will defenately be killed, maimed or even turned into a vegetable because of them.

You cannot protect people from all things that are harmful to them and I honestly believe that the sort of sanitised and clean lifestyle we currently lead is ultimately bad for us.
