The day after Christmas, the Feast of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is better known as Boxing Day. The term may come from the opening of church poor boxes that day; maybe from the earthenware boxes with which boy apprentices collected money at the doors of their masters' clients.
Nowadays, we often see, in certain families, gifts (boxes) given to those who provide services throughout the year.
"Boxing Day" is listed in the Canada Labour Code as a holiday.
Robert here, after a lengthy sabbatical. Hmmmm. Can't think of anything not in my profile. Um, uh, Happy Holidays to all. There. That's not in there...
I do - if you're not secure with yourself, or lacking esteem, chances are you are worried that you're not good enough, thus jealous that he/she may be looking elsewhere.
Tomorrow it's supposed to rain here. The car will get dirty, something I accept. I also have to accept the fact that the moment the pavement dries I'll be at the local powerhose wash. Sick.
I'll take the pragmatic, and admittedly easy, way out: The english language is still spoken (as plarkin pointed out, in some cases, not very well) by the vast majority here.
My last .02 on this subject (if it is deemed worth that much).
I love diversity, one of the things I actually like about Southern California. I am often told I am on the wrong end of an immigration discussion, legal or otherwise.
That being said, if I were to move to another country, my reasonable expectation is that I would have to try to assimilate to that country, not vice versa. That's all.
While the Germans could likely not muster an invasion of California, we do have an Austrian running the joint
I understood the context of what was stated in Rich's original post, and also agree with the part that our pledge should remain in English, just as it has always been.
The flipside is, living here in So Cal, that I would like to learn and become fluent in Spanish. I find the Hispanics here a much nicer people than the well-to-do...
Interestingly, since I deleted my account four days ago - there's been a notable decrease in spam. Like, almost none. Go figure...could be a coincidence?
RE: Boxing day
I do a lot of (automotive) research for work - I need to remind myself that I am not in the office! Actually, I think Mike's answer was much better...
