Hotter than hell

A cluster of wildfires has scorched the Texas Panhandle, including a blaze that grew into one of the largest in state history, as flames moved with alarming speed and blackened the landscape across a vast stretch of small towns and cattle ranches.

Authorities warned that the damage to communities on the high plains could be extensive.

The largest fire — which expanded to more than 3367 square kilometres — jumped into parts of neighbouring Oklahoma and was only about 3% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Mad and dangerous

Donald Trump said the US election will be “liberation day” for his supporters and “judgement day” for his enemies in a high-octane speech ahead of winning the South Carolina primary.

The former president, 77, vowed his second term would mean “revenge” for his opponents as he promised to “fire” Joe Biden, 81.

In my opinion

Death by Spaghetti

A woman in Italy accused of murdering great-aunt with spaghetti

A woman in Italy is awaiting trial after allegedly murdering her great-aunt — with spaghetti.

Paola Pepe, 58, was arrested after she allegedly force-fed Maria Basso the pasta dish at a restaurant in Sicily in December 2022, Nine reports.

The 80-year-old, who was susceptible to choking, died two days after eating the meal after it became lodged in her airways.

A police investigation was launched after Pepe changed Basso's will to name herself the sole beneficiary of her great-aunt's estate in the days prior.

The NZ$823,420 inheritance was to go to charity before it was amended.

Scientists are concerned about the spread of disease within deer populations in North America, write Samuel White and Philippe Wilson.

In the tranquil expanses of North America’s woodlands and grasslands, a silent but concerning phenomenon is unfolding: chronic wasting disease (CWD).

The condition — often dubbed "zombie deer disease" — is stealthily spreading among deer populations, sparking concerns among scientists, conservationists and the public alike.

This neurological affliction, characterised by myriad symptoms, such as drooling, lethargy, stumbling and a vacant gaze, has now been detected in over 800 samples of deer, elk and moose in Wyoming alone, highlighting the scale and urgency of the issue.

At the heart of the CWD puzzle lies a peculiar culprit: prions.

No more trips to the beach boys

The management team of Brian Wilson has petitioned to place him in a conservatorship because of his mental decline and the recent death of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, who managed his daily life.

The 81-year-old Beach Boys co-founder and mastermind has a “major neurocognitive disorder” and is taking medication for dementia, according to a doctor’s declaration filed with the petition Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

French letters from home

Since covid and the re opening of our borders it seems to me that 1 in 3 tourists/ backpackers are French

In many ways they are the most arrogant and self centered race i have ever met

They snort
Insist on speaking French and smoke non stop

After a few drinks I asked a group of them why they had even bothered to visit NZ

If they did not even bother to try to converse in the English language why not just stay home , save money and watch documentaries on you tube.

My comments went down as well as the "rainbow warrior"
