Product reviews: love or hate...

I wanted to buy a new lawn mower last year. This is not the first time I've purchased a mower and knew what I didn't want. So, I checked online and found several.
But... which one to buy?

For the most part, reading the product reviews to see what others (who bought the model I'm most interested in) have found reviews at both ends of the scale.

The first said "bad product, don't buy it"
The next one said "great product, buy it"
The third said "bad product, don't buy it"
The fourth one said "great product, buy it"

One reviewer didn't like the sales help so he poo-pooed the lawn mower based on that experience. I can't use such skewed information. I prefer to buy locally and inspect the merchandise. Mail order for some items is not a good idea. I'm finding product reviews are really worthless.

The mower I bought works great. No complaints as for it's price range it does what I need to get done. No frills... cut grass. I entered my own product review and gave it a positive score!

Too busy this week to cut my own lawn, I paid the neighbor to do it. He likes that mower too!

I always read product reviews before buying.

But you have to read them properly, and what they are talking about.

Sometimes the reviews have nothing to do with the product itself. More about the delivery or instructions, etc. Or sometimes the person might only have it a few days when you can't give an review of the product.
I only take notice of the ones who actually know what they are talking about, both good and bad.
molly, agreed. Thanks for your comment. You must qualify the reviews.
5 stars and the comment "I love it" isn't a qualified review.

Staying with the subject of lawn mowers, it was recommended to buy one with larger back wheels. They claimed the larger wheels didn't sink into the grass when the bagging attachment was full. Small detail... Having owned one with larger rear wheels, I found it was more difficult to tip and turn the mower because of the (get ready for science class) the fulcrum effect. The location of the handle to the frame was in front of the wheel and tipping the mower with smaller wheels was much easier. Consider that a few hundred times when cutting your lawn. Groan...
I don't bother to read product reviews cause they mean absolutely nothing to me.I purchase mainly what my budget will handle.
I don't trust the reviews, because a lot of the positive ones are probably written by someone working at the company who made the item and a lot of the negative ones are likely written by competitors.
Speak to the manufacturer
Merc I wouldn't trust the manufacturer either cause it's obvious that they would attempt to talk you into buying their products.I'd rather purchase the said product and use my own judgement and not depend someone else's .I trust no one.
The people I would trust somewhat are Consumer Reports.

You can either subscribe (in print or digitally online) or visit your local library. head banger
JN I wouldn't even somewhat trust Consumers Reports either.
