It is a shame...but there is a device to help rid the oceans of plastic...
If we have polluted the seas to such a massive scale then I shudder to think what man has done to the land.
As I have said before, We humans need to take up and face our responsibilities and leave this planet in a better condition than when we arrived!
Totally agree...we need to get our head out of the sand...our food suppy is contaminated with plastic...
Years ago in upstate New York the county would spray drain oil on the dirt roads to keep the dust down. I don't know if they still do that.
I guess you can't expect much from a species which evolved from Monkeys.
So far as I know, they're at the stage of Proof Of Concept.
I searched the subject & came up with info on this device - posted less than a day ago...
The prospect of cleaning up oceans is staggering.
Hell! I have a tough time envisioning that much plastic - let alone ridding the oceans of the stuff.
That infamous floating island of plastic in the Pacific is 3× the area of France.

Folks then didn't eliminate Malthusianism - just pushed it into the future, when the consequences would be more far reaching & calamitous.
Their future ... is our NOW.
You got me curious & I searched what might've been/is being used.
The general thinking is that it varied by location, and often was the easiest & most economical option at hand.
Used crankcase oil may have been used back in the day.
Other possibilities -
Derivatives from processing soybean oil.
In Trinidad & Tobago - A lonnggg lasting (80 years) concoction involving molasses & egg whites
I'm NOT making that up ...
And why not?
Where do you suppose fish & whales take care of bidness?!
Let us suppose we develop the technology to extract plastic from the ocean & commit the resources to git er done
We then do with it ... WHAT?!?!

I imagine the concentration is the primary factor.
A relatively few cows in a fairly good sized pasture - not a problem
Many cows crowded into a relatively small feed lot - a problem
