Advice

Being a stubborn and independent old woman I need advice rolling on the floor laughing
Can somebody please tell me what's happened. I have laid 5 terraces all using the same method and composite decking, so it matches, yes I'm fussy like that. However the last one I've done has problems. The composite decking has decided to split length ways, not just one plank but at least 14 about 50% of it.
Any ideas would be good. yes i have asked my male friends, all i get is head scratching and yes one built his own house and the other a master carpenter.
Thankyou.

It was probably caused by shrinkage. It will split with the grain not across it. Wood needs to be dried to the right moisture content before it is fixed in place otherwise uneven drying, shrinkage and stress will occur resulting in splitting due to it being restricted by it's fixings and heat from the sun on the top side.
That batch was probably not suitably dried for the local climate. I've worked with timber a long time and that's my opinion (so-called CS expert). laugh

You may be able to bring it back.
Sorry my fault I called it composite but its actually the plastic stuff laugh
It may still be the same problem with a slightly different cause. Most splits and cracks are caused by expansion and contraction. If the material can't move it can split. You've heard plastic gutters and rwp's. They have expansion joints as part of the design to allow the pieces to slide.

Are these planks extruded hollow lengths and are the splits in one of the hollows, between fixings.

This is a bit like a board game without any clues. How many questions are we allowed. conversing laugh
They're not hollow, but, look like from the edge that they're made from long hollow tubes joined together if that makes sense. What I don't understand is why that terrace that has been built exactly like the others and even in full Sun the others are good. Wondering if its a duff lot but as I did it 3 years ago no guarantee left.
But thanks for helping handshake
Even if the guarantee time has run out, you should contact the supplier and / or the manufacturer. They WILL be very concerned that their product appears faulty and will probably replace it for free. For sure they will want some of the boards to do tests on. thumbs up
Shrinkage aka Entropy.
Agent probably too much rain as that area is sheltered from the sun
Star yes I probably will do that and keep my fingers crossed.
Different batch and was inferior. I got talked into a plastic corregated roofing for an arbor. And before even up it was "melting". I wanted fiberglass but lumber yard said it was so thin they didn't carry it anymore and this stuff would last decades. I watched as the corrigations slowly flattened in the sun. In another year it was brittle and anything hit it put a hole in it. I went back to the lumberyard and raised holy Hannah. Oh yeah..stopped carrying that also. Thanks for ^&*$%#%!very mad Now I use polycarb and that does hold up. Even it off warranty, for satisfaction, return to supplier and even to company mfg and ask what the heck is wrong. Solid is solid. Tubes encased is not. Can you see the ends of the good ones?
Or I'll start with photos and see what happens but lifting it and replacing will have to wait a bit until my knee is fully working.
