Diagnosing . . Trusting Doctors . .

This issue really troubles me .. I have no problem of going to the doctor if I have minor things like high fever or flu .. But I would never dare and risk to go and check whether I have cancer or not .. I have heard from some friends about what happened to people they love because of misdiagnosing ..

I also remember our neighbour (he is dead now) he was not feeling well, and when he went to the doctor she told him that he was fine and all he needed was vitamins, he did what she told him for few months not realising that cancer was developing, when he travelled to the UAE and went to a hospital there, they told him he had cancer but it was too late for him to get the necessary treatment ..

I am not saying that all the doctors like that, but it is really hard to see people being victims of misdiagnosing, especially if those people are people we know and love ..

Well I am fortunate that I have had the same doctor for a long time and do trust him.

Doctors are human and can make mistakes. Hopefully very few though....

The problem arises that if you can't trust your doctor then who can you turn to?
Hi african

Sort of the same thing happen this week when the car stopped working, I guessed it was the battery, the roadside rescue reckon a tow truck was needed, a passerby told me it was out of gas.. doh

Doctors can't really tell you whats wrong with us, just by looking at us, unless you describe in detail where the pain is or your whole family has been to the same doctor all their lives. I went to two doctors with the same story and both gave different answers... it makes me wonder how many die by doctors guess work.
@zandaar: Yes true, doctors are human and to err is human .. The misdiagnosing thing is the worst thing that could ever happen to anyone .. And it seems to me that (at least what I see in kuwait) it is getting worse and worse inspite of the fact that kuwait is a very rich country and the hospitals along with the equipments are new ..
Bad joke - Doctor's can bury their mistakes.
@ru4eva: excatly! it is all now about guessing!! doh .. Why not they ask to do some examination then they decide?!dunno
@African Odds are if you went and saw a doctor for something serious, you would get a correct diagnosis. Don't let a couple misdiagnosis scare you. And always get 2nd and 3rd opinions if you feel in your gut the doctor is wrong. Then you should be OK. What if you really did have cancer and didn't go because you were afraid of a misdiagnosis? That wouldn't be good either.
in middle east, they got the super sofisticated hospitals and instrumennt...they have good service...but no good doctors...i am always scared to go to hospital when i was there...
African.. Unless your dying on the floor of the doctors I think they think you will be ok or live a while longer.

Zandaar.. in our country and I will say many other countrys, doctors are protected from mistakes.

I would not like to be a doctor.
@sabusha: finally someone has an experience of what I was saying ..

@ru4eva: I have been saying the same thing to myself, unless I feel something really serious then I don't want to take risk
I have been very lucky during my life having been ill very few times that needed a hospital visit, but i was diagnosed wrongly when 11 years old, which nearly cost me my life, diagnosed MYGRAIN,in fact PERITONITUS, SIMILAR ILLNESS??? doh
thing is that cancer can be pretty concealed and symptoms can easily be mistaken/misregarded/underestimated.

I did read countless articles regarding the hazards of self-medication and indeed it's not advisible to self-medicate; however, being informed yourself can indeeed save u life.

A trivial example, if i had a growing lump in me leg, I wouldn't settle for a couple of pinches and a 'u are alright' by a doc meself ... Would only settle for a biopsy ....

Yeah perhaps it's a tad paranoid but better safe then sorry me pa says ...

smoking (<-- that causes cancer amongst other problems ... :/)
@lordarun: sorry to hear about what happened when you were younger comfort , it is great that now you don't need to go to the hospital .. hope it will always be this way ..

@10kOhms: I don't know much about cancer, but I guess at the hospital they have equipment to tell whether you have cancer or not >> so why the misdiagnosing thing is happening over and over again ..confused
Here in NZ there are two kinds of treatment, one is in a public hospital, which is free, the other is private, which you will pay a arm and a leg for treatment, unless you have medical insurance. Private treament is far better than public and faster. In public hospital there are two or more year waiting list to get treated.

Oh there is a third and thats a witch doctor..laugh, funny thing is they are better than private and public for diagnosing problems.
If we all trusted our gut feeling a little more, we could realize the doctor's diagnosis is right or maybe wrong( and therefor go and see another doctor). We were taught that all doctors are Gods in white, but still they are just human!
Beside the many mistakes they make there are so many people they are helping.
I for myself check out first if I can work with alternative treatments. If they don't work, then I go and see a doctor.
@EyesWideOpen67: I pretty much do the same .. I always try to find a treatment myself .. And I highly respect all doctors, some of them are really brilliant people .. Being a doctor is the most difficult job since many lives are within their hands ..
African wave

very tough topic for Sunday morning.... but each of us sonner or later has had experience with "cancer matter" personaly or at our close friends or family relatives. African, what you need to do is to see several docs regularly a year and trust a bit preventive medicine.

Have a great Sunday all wave
@Aswina: I will try doing that, still I am bit scared I don't want to hear bad news blues ..

Have a great Sunday too teddybear teddybear
African, believe me , nobody wants ... take your time to live your life and get stronger teddybear don´t bother yourself with fears now! You are young, you are strong! And I hope, you will be for long time so!hug
@Aswina: so you think that there is no need to go for a medical check? I really don't want that, the thought of the possibility of having cancer scares me so much ..

Thanks for the nice words, you are so sweet bouquet
laugh you are just as my 19 - year - old daughter!!! Girls listen to me a bit! Must go for medical checks regularly !!
Only preventive medicine is the best way to avoid or stop all in the beginning!
teddybear
@Aswina: I am apologize for that laugh .. Yeah I guess that would be a lot better than having to worry all the time >> will need to prepare myself soon (not sure when though confused ) I will try to be strong enough to do that cheers ..

Thanks for the great advice handshake
When I was first diagnosed with cancer I knew something wasnt right even though the doctor would just give me antibiotics and say its nothing. I pushed and pushed till I was sent to a specialist.
After a six year remission I knew again something wasnt right and went straight to my oncologist.
I would be a bit like you Africa, regarding Doctors.Only that i changed my Doctors in 2007 i would have being dead.
The First doctor was sending me to have an operation on a Brain Tumour that was very small.
I decided to change Doctors because i have a very good sixth sence. The second Doctor told me that it is very small and not cancerous because of the M.R,I x-ray.I am lucky i am here. The second Doctor told me i would be mad to go for the operation.Glad i took his advise.
Sometimes you are your own best Doctor, you know that if your body is giving you pain that it is sending out a warning signal.
I am my own best Doctor and i am free. laugh laugh
Just don't and try not to worry too much as worring only causes the situation to feel worse than it is.
You don't drink, you don't smoke, you live a healthy lifestyle so you will be ok.
Most of your Doctors are very good but they leave to come to the west because of more money and more opportunities.Correct me if i am wrong. Our Hospitals are full of Doctors from the Middle East.May you have good health for a long time to come.professor
@Bindy75: I hope you fully get over it this time sad flower

@BlueOcean2011: I am glad to hear that you followed your feelings and you are fine now thumbs up .. I think the doctors go to the west so they can develop themselves, as for the ones in kuwait I believe they are being well paid, but what chances that he/she could offer even more? I would say very little, as there is not enough encourgement, and those people are often ambitious and want to give more ..

I am taking care of myself, but one never knows .. I pray that you will have good health for a long time as well bouquet
Africanwave

I too hate seeing doctors when I was still growing up and right into my twenties but now that has changed after getting married and having babies.. I do a once a year medical checkup including pap smear and mammogram.
African, if you feel something is not right in your body for instance, then pls have a check up... go to 2 or 3 doctors to get their opinions for cross checking....teddybear
Hi African!wave In my life I have lost both my best friend, and some family in canser... It seams like going to the docktor, is something that`s safe as long as you don`t need a doctor...dunno
Have a great day(ore night ore whatever) grin teddybear
@ african... plz,,do not think of this matter,,and be strong.
and not all the doctors Bad...there are some very good.

@ aswina; good advise from you to all of the girls.thumbs up

teddybear
miss you too...you said:

yes, not all doctors are bad, it is getting misdiagnosed what scares me more .. but I think the best thing is seeing more than one doctor as every body here suggested ..

That's right and the best suggestion.

wish you be in a good health.

bouquet
@zahra450: teddybear wish you good health too sweet zahra bouquet
if it's an important determination, get a second opinion from another doctor who is not connected to the first one. If their opinions are different, go to a third one. peace
@JimNastics: lol I guess with three doctors I should be fine >> after all three is the magic number giggle

@session9: I am glad I am not alone in this, I had times thinking of what I am going to do if I found out that I have cancer .. It is really a hard decision to do alone, and I didn't say anything to my family so I don't make them scared, if I am going to do it I will do it secretly ..
