Is this the begining of the end for Antarctica?

The once pristine wilderness, Antarctia - will it eventually fall prey to man's Greediness and destructive capabilities, like the rest of the continent? sigh uh oh mumbling mumbling

20 years, 3km of ice... and Russia hits lake

Moscow - Russia said on Wednesday it had pierced through Antarctica's frozen crust to a vast, subglacial lake that has lain untouched for at least 14 million years hiding what scientists believe may be unknown organisms and clues to life on other planets.

Sealed deep under the ice sheet, Lake Vostok is one of the world's last unexplored frontiers. Scientists suspect its depths may reveal new life forms and a glimpse of the planet before the ice age.

El, I watched some reportage by TV.....but why you think it would be the end of Antarctica?blues I hope mankind is much more clever now and will save our planet!hug Am I too big optimist?dunno
Spd(x2)wave Hi, I have always had a strong interest in the Antarctia; have always harboured a secret desire to visit - but read lots on it. A fact that stands out in my mind was that all countries signed some treaty (years ago) that no one country would undertake explorations there; but research would be allowed.
Then also, years ago, there was some kind of law that all people visiting Antarctia would do so under stringent sanitation conditions, similar to those of the Galapagos islands - there are ver rare breeds of animals and fauna, that then couldn't be continimated and decimated by accident.
conversing uh oh Looks like those rules/laws have fallen away now! And who know what next? What if oil, or diamonds or gold is suddenly discovered there - it will start a frenzy/mad rush to colonise the Antarctia! sigh
A scientific study of Antarctica might keep it at it's present state. It is only the discovery of oil or other commercial minerals that would destroy the continent .
Hi El wave

- Well, from what I can tell, the beaches there aren't very inviting. laugh

I think the science is fascinating! They struck water (not oil) so I'm not concerned about commercial interests (who might not be as careful as scientists) getting involved.

I agree with spdspd... I don't see this as leading to bad things for Antarctica. thumbs up
Sorry, for a bigger image of the map: goto................>

Shows which country has claimed which section of Antarctia.
Spd(x2), Frank, Inthemind ~ while we have out faith in mankind ~ the Earth has been let down many times!
Parti ~ that's what I'm afraid of - The grubby paws! And I'm not talking about the polar bears! grin frustrated handshake cheers
Thanks for the article, El. The geeky nerdy in me is a little bit excited about the prospect of new organisms being discovered and what that may imply for other worlds.

But yes, hopefully we have learned restraint and will resist digging Antarctica up like a bunch of gophers.
El, dear! Believe me earth know how to protect itself from us! Just remember the whole history....you will see that every time when we gonna be to cheeky something happened....
I don`t want write more because of my bad English, but I`m sure you understand what I want to tell you.hug
HM ~ thumbs up Hopefully the fountain of youth...or some Miraculous cure! beer handshake

BC ~ wave We certainly hope so! thumbs up wine hug
I'm for leaving it untouched, unspoiled, undiscovered. I'm not convinced scientific inquiry is benevolent or benign to the planet.
Brazilian...To Bloody late, they have already discovered Riches beyond Imagination in Antarctica..And it is only a Matter of Time untill they Trash The Joint!!!help very mad

@ Irishidaho ~ thumbs up beer My exact sentiments! mumbling

Parti ~ would it help if we nominated Australia as custodians of Antarctia as they're closest? conversing mumbling Are Aussies to be trusted? conversing uh oh wink wink
Yes they will trash the place, its inevitable, and the excuses they use for doing so, would do justice, to a 3 ring circus.snowglobe
I just think of one thing, the ice. Please God don't let the ice melt before its too late for me to see it... wink grin

Kidding aside, I thing it would be better to let those things be left untouched and unharmed.

Spd, love your new hair. smitten
Jim ~ your pic reminds me of a beautiful movie; I seen about penguins - loved the critters ever since. confused Forgot the movie name now!

Shay ~ the ice will be there for a long time still! Although a large chunk of Ross Shelf broke away recently. Can you imagine a piece of ice bigger than the country of Belgium?

I have expressed interest more so because a few reasearch ships come to our ports to fuel up and stock up supplies before they go to Antarctia & I've seen & spoke to a few of the crew! They give facinating accounts of their journeys...... conversing wow wine cheers handshake
Thanks, Elhug I am learning a new info thumbs up wine

Very cool topic...and getting cooler...ouch too cool brrrhelp
yay And hope those ice will be there "really forever" El.
Lach/Shay ~ Now there's a destination and a half for a honey-moon trip! laugh laugh One you'll never forget! cool A real cool trip, hey!
The ice can (and earth as Spd said) can recover if we (current generation) change our attitudes towards pollution & a "green style of living".........thumbs up wine hug hug peace
Great topic Elmo thumbs up
I too fear our individual greed (moreso the Corporate greed) will have a negative effect on this pristine area. However to truly believe that we are the cause of the ice melting is arrogance on a universal scale. The cyclical history of our planet is responsible and although we should clean up our act, we have very little to do with the warming of our planet. It's just another info spin to generate money for the already too rich corporations. I applaud global consciousness in all areas that we can control but let's get a hat with a real tight head band here...we are miniscule in comparison to mother nature. She will let us go so far and then bring on another ice age to scour her planet clean and begin again.
Let's all hope that we learn as we go.professor dunno
Rider ~ wave thumbs up Spd(x2) & I also think: I quote you; " She will let us go so far and then bring on another ice age to scour her planet clean and begin again." We seem to forgotten she has done it in the past!!! cheers handshake
