In Aceh an aftershock of 6.5 was recorded, Indonesia disaster mitigation agency said.
"It began as a mild tremor and then got stronger," an AFP journalist in Banda Aceh was quoted as saying.
"There are people trying to evacuate, some are praying and children at a school were panicking as teachers tried to get them out.
"There are traffic jams everywhere as people are trying to get away from the coast."

Jakarta's safe, Simmo.
I hope that the affects are minimal and that everyone can get to a place of safety and comfort.
But an alert is still in place.
The movement of the plate tectonics was sideways and not up and down which was the type that caused the 2009 wave.
I hope this does not happen and hope everyone is safe
