Patirotic

I have always been very patriotic and I always fly my flag on days dedicated to patriotism. I love the Star Spangled Banner, and I cannot count the times I have sung it, I have played it , or the number of times I have conducted it ( I am a retired Band Director). A few days ago I came apart, I heard a female MURDER my favorite national anthem. In her vocal interpretation, in which she warbled around what was supposed the melody, was thoroughly disgusting, to me it was vocal graffiti on a public and government entity. If I was to spray graffiti on the White House or the National Capital Building ,I would be arrested for defacing the property. I have heard others do the same at ball games and I think there should be a law against the degradation of the anthem. I know there will never be a law to contain that sort of treatment, after all , look at what the Republican Supreme Court stated about it being alright to burn the flag of the United States. (conservative?? - seems overly liberal to me!) frustrated very mad studecar (Larry)

People should be allowed to burn anything they want so long as they bought it themselves. and no-one else is mentally, Physically or fiscally harmed. dunno

Patriotism is no longer Patriotism when it puts material things before people, Flags included...

It becomes capitalism. wine
The first time I went to the States, I was young and when I saw American flags hanging in people's gardens, I couldn't understand why.

I remember asking my American cousin if those people didn't know what country they were in or something, to say they had to have the flag outside their doors to remind them!

Flags would only be out here if there was a big international football game or something, and that is only a relatively modern phenomenon. Before, you would only see it when fans travelled abroad, or on St. Patrick's Day.

We just kinda always knew we were Irish, and didn't need a flag in our front garden to prove it. Maybe I still don't fully understand it dunno
Molly, it's repetition, and with repetition comes belief and with belief comes conviction and with conviction comes the love that God has bestowed upon the world.....
Molly, it's repetition, and with repetition comes belief and with belief comes conviction and with conviction comes the love that God has bestowed upon the world.....
Sands, so you are saying that watching the flag flying outside your door is necessary to believe you are American?

That seems a little insecure to me.
No Molly, it's a reinforcement...like I stated last night at church to hear the singing of God Bless America was so touching. I hear the song at every baseball game, but to hear it in church was somewhat special.... with all going on in the world, it feels comforting to have a strong belief in God and country.....
Well, you've lost me on the god bit, or should I say he lost me a long time ago.
But I think sometimes people put patriotism before humanity, and forget what is really important in the world.

Am I proud to me Irish? Absolutely.
But I don't need a constant reminder of a flag to reinforce that.
I know what I am. I don't need reminding.
Molly, maybe it's time to get reacquainted. We are in unprecedented times. cheers
Sands, I don't need to become reacquainted with who and what I am. I just am cheers

And these are not unprecedented times. They are just unprecedented times for certain people in certain communities.

Things have always happened before, and things have always happened somewhere.
Molly, when your assailants are wearing normal civilian clothes it's unprecedented....
Sands, that too has happened throughout history.

Nothing is unprecedented.
I didn't realise the CIA and other operatives working in foreign countries wore uniforms to announce their arrival wow
Different weapons, same results.
Maybe so, but it's always nice to know in advance who is going to annihilate you......those whites of the eyes.......cool

I USED TO BE LOYAL TO THE STATE BUT NOT ANYMORE SINCE IT TURNED TOTALLY AGAINST ALL I BELIEVE AS A CHRISTIAN < THE BIBLE ABSOLUTELY FORBIDS A CHRISTIAN TO BE LOYAL TO A STATE THAT TURNS AGAINST HIM AND HIS WORD> GOD COMES FIRST AND THE STATE COMES LAST> I WILL ONLY FLY THE CHRISTIAN FLAG NOW>
Christianity didn't exist when the bible was written...study your history
Hi Molly, although the exact date Christianity formed is debatable, I'll go with 29 AD which puts the bible writings after the formation....

a google: Christianity began, let me discuss the
actual date of this event. For a number of reasons, most notably Luke’s
comment that Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great (who died
in 4 or possible 3 BC), we know that Jesus was born in about 6-5 BC.
Given that the crucifixion had to occur in a year when the pre-Passover
Seder feast occurred on a Friday, possible years for the crucifixion are
AD 29 or AD 33. The most likely date, in my opinion, is AD 29. The Day
of Pentecost occurred fifty days after the Passover (and thus the name
Pentecost) and forty-nine days after the Feast of First fruits (and thus
the other common name for Pentecost, which is the Feast of Weeks).
Therefore, taking the Day of Pentecost as the day the Christianity began,
it would be 50 days after the Passover (15th of Nisan) in the year AD 29.
i wouldn't disagree with the dates of the birth of Jesus, it had to be Herod died, an the census of Quirinius was on then also.
But Christianity as a religion wasn't necessarily formed on the Pentecost you mentioned.
And when did the writers of the bible both write them, and die?

We are presuming that the splendid gent ahead of me was talking about about the new testament rather than the old, although his assertion sound more old testamenty to me - so it would be pre-christian to me, although I don't claim tp be a theologist nor religious historian
to , nonsmoker, when you buy a flag of the united states, you do not buy a piece of cloth, you buy a piece of honor, patriotism, and respect, which I suspect you have none when you say it is alright to trash it because paid for it. I and hundreds of others gave up 4 years of our lives during WWII to make this a better country for you. If I knew how to contact ISIS I would tell them they need you - AMERICA DOESN'T. studecar very mad frustrated
Not all Americans think that way, Ian. sad flower

Nationalism is a disease. Makes people blind and weak.

We're number 1!!!.....not.

Better get off the flag debate and go do something to make the world a little better, Merikans.
Similar to folks who go to church on Christmas and Easter, then treat everyone like inferior beings the rest of the year, the flag bearers hang the flag and then go about shopping at Walmart and eating McDonalds. Yuck.
Get..I just had a maccy d..lol

Hey Larry...You have a valid point about how the Natl Anthem was being sung....I also heard that singer and her version....I commented to someone else about how the singer was butchering the song! Well, your blog has taken a "twist" away from the original subject as often happens....just wanted to say here that I agree with the idea that the Natl Anthem sounds best to most of us when we can recognize it! Why should a performer present such a version that it is almost unrecognizable? Maybe for the "shock effect"....showing the public that she is "different" and "unique"? Okay, so now she did get our attention and we know she is "unique"....but in reality what she accomplished is to show the absurdity of her version of the Natl Anthem.....only resulting in our dreading her appearance on any future presentations that would involve her singing! handshake
Hope you had a great 4th.....yay
The flag, national anthem, and the rituals of the tribe have never spoken to me. Probably because I don't believe that I live in a country which achieves great things.

Epic patriotism of congratulating and celebrating yourself doesn't have a lot of class in this day. It feels empty. I love the soil under my feet and I love having more in common with the British than any other people on the earth. I look out for the interests of both. That's what patriotism is to me.
To me patriotism has more to do with the people, the rabbits and the squirrels than it does with the flag.
Hi avias, thanks for the comments concerning the National Anthem , I am astounded at the number of people who feel no emotion for our country or its representative figures, be it the flag or the Star Spangled Banner, or a governmental division including our armed forces. I realize our country is not perfect, but it is so far ahead of the majority of countries that anyone who trashes it should be made to spend a year in a country which has nothing but problems including the want of food. It seems most of the grumbling is coming from the younger generation. Thanks again for your input. studecar Larry
