Pelorus Jack (fl. 1888 – April 1912) was a Risso's dolphin that was famous for meeting and escorting ships through a stretch of water in Cook Strait, New Zealand, between 1888 and 1912. Pelorus Jack was usually spotted in Admiralty Bay between Cape Francis and Collinet Point, near French Pass, a notoriously dangerous channel used by ships travelling between Wellington and Nelson.
Pelorus Jack was shot at from a passing ship, and was later protected by a 1904 New Zealand law.
Appearance
Pelorus Jack was approximately 13 feet (4 m) long and was of a white color with grey lines or shadings, and a round, white head. Although its sex was never determined, it was identified from photographs as a Risso's dolphin, Grampus griseus. This is an uncommon species in New Zealand waters, and only 12 Risso's dolphins have been reported in that area.
History
Pelorus Jack guided the ships by swimming alongside a water craft for 20 minutes at a time. If the crew could not see Jack at first, they often waited for him to appear.
Despite his name, he did not live in nearby Pelorus Sound; instead, he would often guide ships through dangerous passages of French Pass. However, some local residents familiar with his habits claim that he never went through French Pass itself.
Pelorus Jack was first seen around 1888 when it appeared in front of the schooner Brindle when the ship approached French Pass, a channel located between D'Urville Island and the South Island. When the members of the crew saw the dolphin bobbing up and down in front of the ship, they wanted to kill him, but the captain’s wife talked them out of it. To their amazement, the dolphin then proceeded to guide the ship through the narrow channel. And for years thereafter, he safely guided almost every ship that came by. With rocks and strong currents, the area is dangerous to ships, but no shipwrecks occurred when Jack was present.
Many sailors and travellers saw Pelorus Jack, and he was mentioned in local newspapers and depicted in postcards.
Jack was last seen in April 1912. There were various rumours connected to his disappearance, including fears that foreign whalers might have harpooned him. However, research suggests that Pelorus Jack was an old animal; his head was white and his body pale, both indications of age, so it is likely that he died of natural causes.
Since 1989, Pelorus Jack has been used as a symbol for the Interislander, a ferry service across the Cook Strait, and is incorporated into the livery of the ships in the fleet.

In 1904, someone aboard the SS Penguin tried to shoot Pelorus Jack with a rifle. Despite the attempt on his life, Pelorus Jack continued to help ships. According to folklore, however, he no longer helped the Penguin, which shipwrecked in Cook Strait in 1909.
Protection
Following the shooting incident, a law was proposed to protect Pelorus Jack. He became protected by Order in Council under the Sea Fisheries Act on 26 September 1904. Pelorus Jack remained protected by that law until his disappearance in 1912. It is believed that he was the first individual sea creature protected by law in any country.

That's the legend. However, what's the reality ?
"When Whales Walked"
I just got done watching a PBS presentation of the title above.
Despite the catchy title, whales never actually walked.
But, their early evolutionary progenitors did.
Think about it. Whales are mammals.
Most of the mammals that live in the ocean are closely related to whales, such as dolphins.
Indeed, both the bone structure and DNA testing reveals this.
One can speculate that life itself may have started in water and much later some amphibians evolved and later full land dwellers evolved.
So, did an amphibian evolve back to full time water dwelling.
That would seem like an easier move than a land dweller doing so.
Indeed, that is closer to the truth with manatee. They appear to be closely
related to hippos, which aren't really amphibians, but do spend a large part of their life in water.
However, when one studies the bone structure, especially teeth, and DNA testing on all the known fossils,
it is discovered that whales are related to a mammal that lived sort of like a crocodile.
It had a large head, a belly that practicly dragged on the ground, and while it lived on land,
it foraged in the water. When one examines older fossils, there is another mammal
that was the size of a house cat, that appears to be an earlier progenitor.
That animal eventually gave rise to different branches that include hippos, and deer as well as the croc like mammal.
So, why would mammals move from the land to the ocean ?
Two evolutionary pressures, would be the escape from predators, and the availability of food.
Now here's the kicker. When looking at the teeth. These 2 progenitors are the closest related to elephants. During their evolution they produced elongated teeth, tusks. One extinct branch had 4 tusks. The tusks enabled them to move large objects, such as trees. Other than humans, elephants are the evolutionary branch, that most directly
changes the landscape. Indeed, as they created pathways through the forest,
it enabled our progenitors to come down from the trees and band together to travel
the savannahs via the elephant 'paved' paths. Thus, our progress is linked to the
success of elephants, and yet, humans are responsible for bringing that species
to the brink of extinction, by both elimination of habitat and slaughter while hunting for the tusks, that ironicly enabled us to come down from the trees.
I strongly suggest you watch the well done PBS video, which enables you to witness the fossils and listen to the paleontologists, as well as see the recreations of the long gone progenitors in addition to seeing the gorgeous animals & scenery.

First Miss Angel....
....and now Miss Lilly.... Two cats next door, who lived here, all in the family, with the big dogs, before human, and then animal separations, a decade ago. Several years ago, after a costly diagnostic work up, the vets pronounced Lilly to have a splenic tumor, and was therefore circling the drain, so to speak. They prescribed palliative medication, and a little fluids, and we took her home to die. That was 2016. Tough old girl. But this AM, out of the blue, she was having trouble walking, with other signs of a kitty stroke. Last night spent in the Vet hospital, and after steroids and lab tests, was only a bit better. We'll all go to see here, but are expecting the worst. 16 years old, so a long and happy life. Her pal, Angel, a Maine Coon mix, and 17, and superb huntress, has been on a downward course for several months, daily more cachectic, but still chowing down, and feisty as ever. The crab, no doubt. Brought home a chipmunk a few weeks ago to show off to the ladies, playing with the bedazzled poor little thing, till one of the girls took it away to set free, in total PTSD, we're sure..Hard as it is to imagine any female actually liking me, both did, and I taught them lot's of fun tricks. So now it looks like both will soon be leaving us. One door closes, another opens. The ladies next door watch Bravo, while I'm away, as I've done for their kitties, and they love this big dumb Shepherd. They've expressed interest in adopting him, which he'd certainly love, then getting spoiled in not one, but two households. Frees me up to work overseas again.Oh, well.

Clover the hero dog

A dog named Clover is being hailed by Canadian media as a hero for helping her human, Haley Moore, survive a seizure that struck her suddenly during a walk.
Moore was strolling through the Stittsville neighborhood of Ottawa on Tuesday when she seized and fell to the curb, CTV News reported.
The incident was captured by a neighbor's home security camera.
Clover, a year-and-a-half-old Maremma mix, sprung into action, attending first to Moore before bounding into the street and stopping traffic.
Dryden Oatway, a driver who stopped thanks to Clover's heroics, said, "It was really impressive, the dog actually blocked my way. She kind of backed into the road to block my truck."
Clover stopped another driver and then returned home.
"All I remember is waking up in the ambulance and being really confused, just like, 'What is going on?'" Moore recalled in an interview with CTV. The cause of seizure remains unknown.
Moore's father, Randall Moore, told CTV that Clover was fed delicious steaks as a reward for her faithful service.
Psychology Today reported in March that new research suggests that seizure-predicting dogs are aided by the scent of volatile organic compounds that are excreted around seizures.
