I'm sick of this

Are your nipples like a truck tyre? I'm sick of hearing this and hearing that blah blah blah. Are they like a truck tyre or not. Simple?

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

I should learn to keep my trap shut but there are things that can annoy me so much that I have to speak. A dog on a chain is one of those things.sigh

Ever since I moved here – while taking my morning walk - I have been noticing this dog in the front yard a few blocks down the road. I don’t know the English name of the breed but in my language we call it a skaaphond which translates to a sheep dog. I suspect it may be of English origins. It is a black and white dog with hair of medium length. We keep them on our sheep farms as they are very good with sheep. crazy

I would not really have bothered as it not a spectacular dog. It was well fed with water within his reach and enough shade. But it was tied to a stake in the ground by means of a 2-meter chain.frustrated

This morning, for the first time, I saw the owner in the garden. I introduced myself and we shook hands in true South African style.handshake

“Nice dog”, I commented.

Yes”, he replied. “A well tended dog”.

“You mean a well fed dog”, I said. It slipped out before I could catch it.

“So what is the difference?” he asked. I did not fail to notice the annoyance in his eyes.

“He’s on a chain”, I said.

“Yes, so he is. Otherwise he ruins my garden”, he replied, now clearly irritated.

“That is easy to explain”, I said. “These dogs need plenty of space. He belongs on a farm”.

“Why don’t you mind your own business”, he exploded.

Well, he was right, it was none of my business, and I proceeded with my walk. I normally come back up the next street but my inquisitiveness forced be back the same way and when I passed the house he pretended not to notice me while attaching a steel ring to a tree.hmmm

Can it be that he plans to put the dog on a cable? I surely hope so. It will not satisfy me but it will certainly make me happier.

Letting the cats out

It is a risk. It really doesn't matter where you live, but the general consensus is the odds of death go way up if your house is near a road. Not only is there the routine death where the cat misjudged a car or truck's speed while innocently crossing the road, but there are dogs and mean humans too. All can be lethal. Add to this some cats think dodging a car's wheel is a game. So they will intentionally play it a few times, until they lose.

I live hundreds of yards from the nearest road and it doesn't get that much traffic anyway. So on the one level it seems safer. Also there are no other humans here. So, again, on the surface letting the cat outside on a country property seems safer.

The reality however is grimmer. Sure the cats are happy because they get to hunt mice, moles, baby groundhogs, and even snakes. However what can be forgotten by both them and me is there other critters. Critters to who the cat is either a food chain competitor or actual food. Weasels, raccoons, fox, coyotes, bears, and even possibly much larger cats.

Last night after their dinner I let my Tom cats out. There is still snow on the ground, but they don't care about that too much after they have eaten. Normally they go into the woods and don't come back for an hour or two. A half hour later when I looked. one of them was huddled under the chair outside the door and looking very worried. When he saw me at the door he demanded entry. This was unusual, but I let him in and he seemed quite happy to be inside. No sign of the other one.

About an hour later I heard a scream. It sounded like a scream of extreme pain, but only vaguely cat like. Grabbing a pistol and a Maglite I went outside in the dark and called for the one still out there. Usually within 4 or 10 minutes (depending on how far away they are) they come at my call. Nothing. I saw nothing. I walked around the house and called again. This time I clearly heard something running away in the woods. I called again and from several hundred yards away I heard something yipping then more brush noise slowly fading. No sign of the cat. Sometimes at night when I cast about with the light I will see two eyes gleaming back and know I have found him. Not last night.

I went back inside and at around the usual time of return, although I was worried, I looked outside a few more times and called his name. Finally he showed up. I half heartedly scolded him. He seemed fine, but he was wet. I put it down to snow and let him in.

This morning however his back was still wet. A quick taste, salty, blood. I washed his back in hydrogen peroxide (he hates that, but not today). Much foaming that blotted pink on a paper towel. Examination shows several punctures and evidence something had tried to grab him. He overall seems none the worse. Now however, I am wondering about what I heard. I think it was him screaming like that. I think the yipping was his attacker running away from me. There is enough time lag between the scream and my going out behind the house, that either the fight had already ended, or they had been locked in a wrestle hold till my very presence intervened and the other animal fled. I know this cat and I have seen him chase after other stray cats before when I break up the fight. I think whatever it was, the odds were about 50/50 and when the attacker fled, he pursued till he got tired of it and came home.

He may disagree, but I think he is very lucky and that I nearly lost him. I will not let him out tonight and will instead focus on his injury. Still he will be allowed out tomorrow.

Always when we let our cats out, there will be risk.

Folklore: BLACK CATS ARE BAD LUCK

Today I found out the origin of superstitions surrounding black cats including why a black cat crossing your path is considered bad luck.

**************************************************************************

Black Cats weren’t always the butt of superstitions, feared, or even considered bad luck. In fact, in early Egyptian times, dating back as far as 3000 BC, cats (including black ones) were the rock stars of the animal world, held in high esteem; to kill one was considered a capital crime. It wasn’t until the middle-ages in Europe that the black cat’s rock star status started to go downhill as they began to be associated with so-called witches. The hysteria of witches practicing black magic had just hit Europe and alley cats were often cared for and fed by the poor lonely old ladies (funny how some things never change) later accused of witchery.

Their cat companions, some of which were black ones, were deemed guilty of witchery by association. This belief was taken up a notch when a folklore involving a father and son in Lincolnshire in the 1560’s started making the rounds. The pair were said to have been traveling one moonless night when a black cat crossed their path and dove into a crawl space. Naturally, they did what any guys would do, they threw rocks at the furry feline until the helpless injured creature scurried out into a woman’s house, who at the time was suspected of being a witch. The next day, the father and son came across the same woman and noticed she was limping and bruised and believed that to be more than just a coincidence. From that day on in Lincolnshire, it was thought that witches could turn into black cats at night.

The belief of witches transforming themselves into black cats in order to prowl streets unobserved became a central belief in America during the Salem witch hunts. Even today the association of black cats and witches holds strong during Halloween celebrations, despite the holiday’s religious beginnings. Thus, an animal once looked on with approbation became a symbol of evil omens in some parts of the World.

However, in some cultures, the black cat is still revered and a symbol of good luck even today. The Scottish believe that a strange black cat’s arrival to the home signifies prosperity, while Pirates of the 19th century believed if a black cat walks towards you, it’s a sign of bad luck, but it’s good luck if it walks away from you. In the English Midlands, a black cat as a wedding present is thought to bring good luck to the bride.

new stuff

I got myself a new dog last week. Man do those things shed a lot of hair.
So of course with the new dog you have to spend a bit of cash and get other stuff.
A chewy dog toy, a brush, treats.
Well to cut a long story short, to deal with the hair on my floors I got a new hoover. I wasn't blown away when I turned it on; It really sucked roll eyes wine
