Sometimes schmaltzy blind love of the underdog,...

...or for the under bird, as it were....
Here on the white privileged, VERY white, mid coast of Maine, even in smaller urban areas, wild life abounds. Sure, the white-tailed deer saunter through the thousand hectare Vierk Estates, (and my veggie garden!), now and again. But moose with young in tow? Not to mention coyotes. Lynx. And our share of birds of many sorts. From the returning tiny ruby throat-ed HB each spring, (right to the nectar feeder at our window, after almost 10,000 Km voyages), to bad arse birds of prey. VERY bad. Hawks, owls, falcons, osprey and bald eagles, no less. See these almost daily. As some doth spot my vehicles., and my hats. So...
...Loved the radio report of a rooster, strutting his stuff, not too far away, in his barn yard. One Sir Stanley, as I recall. Well, it seems a red tailed hawk, Stuka dived down onto big little Stasha, and with lots of noise, dragged his little neck and arse off into a neighboring tree line. Concerned farm family came right out to help, but how, really? In these situations, as with armed mobile police protection from home intruders, when seconds count, they arrive in mere minutes. Seconds-second amendment. But....I digress.
Oh no, animal lovers all, not this time. The farmers report seeing the hawk fly off in disgrace, and watched street fighting man Stanley, strut out back to his harem. Poorer by a few feathers, but head erect, crowing/scratching proudly, and appearing no less intact for the encounter. If hens could only applaud, as did the humans, we suspect. Hard to believe for this bozo on the bus. But the radio never lies.

Wish I could make this stuff up, Peebles.

Lazy Pusy

Once upon a time, there was a lazy cat named Whiskers. Whiskers lived a comfortable life, spending most of his days lounging in the sun, napping, and grooming himself. He didn't like to do anything that required much effort, such as hunting for his food or playing with toys.

One day, a mouse sneaked into the house and started stealing Whiskers' food. At first, Whiskers was too lazy to do anything about it, but as the mouse continued to take more and more of his food, Whiskers realized he needed to take action.

He thought about all the ways he could get rid of the mouse, but they all required too much effort. Finally, he came up with a plan that was just lazy enough for him. He started napping in front of the mouse's hiding spot, making it difficult for the mouse to get to the food.

The mouse soon realized it couldn't get to the food with Whiskers in the way and gave up trying. Whiskers was pleased with his clever solution and went back to lounging in the sun, happy to have solved his problem in the laziest way possible.

From that day on, Whiskers had plenty of food and no mouse to bother him, and he lived the rest of his days in lazy contentment.

Chillin'

We've been experiencing a heat wave for several days now.
It's too hot for us humans. Imagine how it feels with a thick layer of fur.
The following scene occurred in the state of Virginia 2 days ago.

"Hey kids, why don't you go cool off in the pool I bought you."

"There's no room mom." "Huh ?"

"Take a look"

Miss Lilly survived, and is back home....

... The vets think it is a lesion in the brain, as apparently older cats get Meningiomas. Her eyesight is down some, but she's walking around with no apparent motor losses. They say that with strokes and such, cats, and some animals "wall point". They walk up to a wall, and just put their noses close and stand there. She did this some for a day right after the event, but now walks about the house, fairly steadily, but occasionally bangs into stuff, with the possible decrease in vision. But eating a bit, and peeing/pooping OK, and clearly recognizes us all. No vocalizations though. Enjoys light brushing, as usual. So all in all, she's not out of the woods by any means, but looks much better than a few days ago. So to me, it might just be a mild stroke, in evolution, hopefully soon to resolve, with only minor remaining disabilities. Angel still treats her like crap, each time they come close to each other, but is wasting away, so Lilly may live longer. Both nice kitties---tough to lose ant pet. Much easier to rid oneself of a woman.

Goodbye Freya...

If you live in the coastal area of Norway, you may have seen Freya, a 1,300 pound walrus.
Freya became an icon for both good and bad as this walrus had climbed on back of some boats to sunbathe and sank a few.
It was determined that sightseers were getting too close and it was feared an endangerment for people, so as a "last resort," spokesman for the Directorate of Fisheries Vegard Oen Hatten said they had to put the animal down.

Local Deer Friends

I seem to have a talent for making friends with deer.
It has lead to excellent photos.

I never feed them. I just respect them and how they feel.
They are generally fearful of humans. I can understand that, and why.
I've learned their cues to this and how to interact with them to make them much more comfortable.
Eventually, they accept me, as one of their herd.

So far, deer in 3 different distant towns totally tolerate my presence.
But, I've never attempted it more locally, until this year.
It's in the beginning stages.
I've taken photos of them 5 times. Six times, if you include today.
Generally, the does are most receptive. Males, having testosterone, generally have less patience.
Thus, again generally the bucks are the least receptive.
However, it's not a rule.

Two times ago just, before dusk, there were 2 of them, a does and a young buck that were
lying down in a field about 15 feet from each other and they let me get near them
and sit down. I took some nice pictures of her, as she was closer.
Then, I got up and walked away from them to go back home.

The last time was 2 young bucks, probably 2 year olds. Their antlers are currently growing
and covered in felt. They tolerated me talking pictures of them as they ate leaves and grass.
I was probably 25 feet from them. They walked about another 20 feet from me
and I sat down, propped up against a tree. To my surprise they walked back close to me,
perhaps 12 feet from me and they both laid down near me. We spent about 20 minutes like
that with me taking pictures of them, before I got up and walked away. I always take it as a big
compliment, when a deer lays down near me. It says, I trust you. The defense of deer is their speed.
They can run very fast. However, they do not get up very quickly. So they won't lay down, unless they trust you at whatever distance you are from them.

Today as I arrived in that area, there were about 12 bucks. Older ones, yearlings and intermediate
aged ones. It was the largest gathering I've seen so far for this herd. While the older bucks ran away from me on previous days (my first experiences with the herd), none of them seemed all that nervous that I was there today. They were in the shade. Some were lying down. Again, I got good shots of them, and then I began to walk away from them. When I did, one of the bucks, perhaps one of the two who previously laid down near me on another day, started following me, as I walked away. He entered into the sunlight, so I stopped and then walked parallel to him to get on his sunnier side and take a couple of more shots of him. When I finally walked away, he had a look on his face, like he was disappointed, or confused, why was I leaving ?

Like humans, and other animals, they each have their own unique personalities and it can lead to friendships.

In the other 3 towns, it was always the matriarch of the herd that decided to accept me as part of the herd. And once the matriarch accepts you, the other deer in that herd will too.
Deer are like elephants in that the boss of the herd is the matriarch. However, in this local herd, it may be different. Perhaps the matriarch got hit by a car recently ?? I haven't seen a matriarch yet in this herd. There are some young does, but no older wiser matriarch, that I've seen. No boss of the herd.
Perhaps they feel a bit lost without one. dunno

So, that's why they have masks. (photos included)

2 juvenile raccoons break into bank through the roof and make their way into the bank.
Someone using the MAC machine noticed them and called the Humane Society.
