Puppies on Cliff - Rescued!

On Saturday evening, a member of a local hiking group fb page posted a desperate plea for help in getting two dogs off a cliff ledge. According to the post, the dogs had been up there for four days crying and barking.

Apparently, a friend of the poster lived right under where the dogs were located and could hear them barking and crying all night, but couldn't get at them to bring them down. The poster had contacted the RCMP and the local Search and Rescue (SAR), and both had told them it wasn't a human and there wasn't anything they could do.

The poster was at his wit's end, begging for someone with climbing experience to help get these two dogs off the ledge and not leave them to starve to death. As many in the hiking group had dogs, the response was immediate and encouraging, with offers of a canine stretcher and various other paraphernalia possibly required.

Receiving enough help, they organized a group to attempt to get the dogs at 6:30am yesterday morning.

A local SAR volunteer apparently offered to help, and probably advised the team that unqualified and inexperienced climbers were going to try and rescue the dogs. Rather than risk the lives of humans trying to rescue the dogs, the SAR team stepped up and in and asked people to stay away from the area in the morning, as they'd be going in themselves to get the dogs.

With bated breath, everyone that was aware of the dogs waited for word on the rescue. Finally, about mid-morning, photos were posted of the SAR rescuers with the puppies in their arms. The dogs were only about 17 weeks old and St. Bernard mix, so still very little. How they got to the ledge and who they belong to is still a mystery, but there are all kinds of offers of adoption.

I can't, for the life of me, understand how two puppies could be left on a ledge and the owner not frantic to get them down. At this point, no one is owning up to ownership, or how those two puppies ended up being there.

My big question is, did the owner and puppies fall and are they missing the owner somewhere down the cliff? Hopefully, no humans are out there, injured, but I'd think SAR would check. So many questions with no answers, but the great news is that the puppies were rescued and are safe.

Tiger incident

Is there anyone here who has no opinion about the Tiger incident and the Collier County Sheriff's Office?
If you type 'Collier County Sheriff's Office' into your Facebook search bar you can both listen to the audio from the 911 call, and also view the body cam footage from the lone deputy sent to check out a report of a tiger eating someone after hours at the town zoo.

For those that live in a cave and somehow missed this story.. A zoo in Florida had a super rare 8 year old Malayan tiger in a zoo park. After the zoo was closed for the night a contracted cleaning company came in every day to sweep the walkways, pick up trash in areas open to the public and clean the cafeteria area. They were not allowed in cages or behind areas closed to the public. Apparently these cleaners worked without much if any supervision. Yesterday, a young man working as one of the after hours cleaners decided it would be a cool thing to sneak over the fence that keeps visitors away from the fence of the tiger cage area and take a selfie of himself reaching through the bars to pet the tiger? What could go wrong with that idea? roll eyes

Within a few minutes the local 911 call center received a phone call from someone screaming hysterically continuously with such a high pitched voice the dispatcher thought she was talking to a female. Something about a tiger eating his hand and later his arm pulling him into the cage. Darwin always wins and he loves those who get high while working or who are just incredibly stupid. You would think by now people would understand iif you enter a tiger or lion's cage you will be eaten. It is a rule of life on the order of, the sun comes up in the morning. The caller goes on screaming and begging for succor quite awhile. Every now and then if you listen closely (one minute 10 seconds is nice and clear) you can hear the sound of crunching bones and occasional happy whuffs from the tiger as he pulls more of his chew toy into the cage area. It must have been fun (don't drop it) to dial the phone one handed and talk into it while the tiger was biting off the tasty fingers of the other hand.

Then there is the body cam footage. The deputy meets the fire dept. and a night shift zoo employee who has no idea why the First Responders are at her zoo. It seems all the lights are out at night and the deputy has the only flashlight. So in the dark they go find the tiger cage. Not too surprisingly they soon hear some of the same screaming the 911 dispatcher is also recording and soon by the light of the flashlight realize there is nothing prank about this call. My PC setup is perfectly capable of frame by frame slow down of a YT or FB video, bracketing and enlarging a screen section and saving that image, and while watching I did of course do so. However I will not break CS rules by posting the images of the wound damage here. Suffice to say I think it is a miracle the man did not bleed out and I also doubt his arm can be saved. Go watch one of the video links to see that.

Very sadly IMO to save the man the Deputy chose to put his gun muzzle as close to the tiger's head as he dared approach and pull the trigger. At the shot the tiger released the man and ran away into the darkness where the flashlight did not reach. Later when more armed people arrived with more lights a cautious search determined the tiger had expired from the wound. The young man faces charges under the US Endangered Species Act as well as various State and local criminal charges.

One armed or not, I have ZERO sympathy for the young man who forced a needless execution of a caged, endangered, tiger. If you can't get Facebook you can still find a link to the Body Cam footage here.

Foxy Lady & my deer friends

I got back to New Jersey (NJ) a couple of weeks ago.
The first few days I was busy unloading the car and unpacking.
After that, there was a stormy time. We got rain and/or clouds for several days.
But, once it was sunny, or mostly sunny, I ventured out to a couple of places
for wildlife photos.

There is a place near Princeton, where there is a bald eagle nest.
And sure enough, momma eagle was in the nest when I visited.
She was arranging her livingroom, making sure all the sticks were placed just so
to prevent any little ones from falling out. I got some nice photos of her and the nest.

After I left there, I headed where there is a place, that a deer family has pretty much accepted me as part of their herd. The matriarch over time has come to realize, that I mean them no harm.
So if my presence is OK with her, the rest of the herd is OK with it too.
It allows me to take some nice close-ups of the herd members, including when there are fawns (not yet).
There's actually another herd in Princeton where another matriarch has also accepted me.
But, I saw neither hide nor tail of them the other day.

Since I've gotten back to NJ, I've actually visited with the herd I mentioned first above, twice.
They have a smaller range than the southern herd, so I can find them easier.
Both times on the way to them, I saw a female red fox. She's beautiful !
Black legs with a bright red body. But, both times she saw me , before I saw her, and when I did notice her, she was racing at top speed, away from me deeper into the woods.
This second time, however, I noticed 2 kits (baby foxes), who retreated into a ravine, as mom ran off.
So, I ventured into that area and found their den.
I got some nice shots of the 2 very cautious, but curious kits sticking their head out to see if I was still there.

I then realized what the momma fox was trying to do. She wanted me to chase her (I never would have caught her), rather than go near her kits. Very foxy lady ! Literally, smart AS a fox. thumbs up
