Nature and nurture....

...as the evidence keeps accruing. Even Abbey Father Mendel's pea plants show the effects of both, if one looks hard, under tight modern experimental conditions.
Ever wonder why few have valid formed memories of events before the age of two years? Or why studied populations of men with heavy genetic loading for violence as adults, rarely show such behaviors, unless they were also bullied, or worse, as boys? Lot's more.
Strict genetic control of human behaviors is a cop out politically, policy-wise, etc., ---always has been.
Shouldn't be at all surprised.

Ongoing public health stuff.

Having once more deftly managed my usual pathetic detractors, and gently further bonded with the man crush fellows, it's back again to shameless showing off, under the pretext of unsolicited public education. We've covered, in only a few Blogs, most of the ideas underlying basic, and even more advanced, Epid. It's origins, purposes, development, ground level technical features, and much more, were covered, admittedly only in a cursory fashion. But careful readers will have gotten the main points.
Of course, in these days of the Chinese Wuhan wet markets virus, many will want to know what Epid reveals about this latest gift to the world from the one party Han state. In doing so, many of the basic concepts which were covered earlier in the lecture series enter in.
Now we cover various features of statistical analysis, showing how closely related are medicine, Epid, public health and biostatistics. This actually is an extension of calculating the results of laboratory experimentation. It's rare to compare just two mice, or viral tissue culture Petri plates, for the differences after different exposures to experimental variables. And ideally, many attempts are made to have these, before the experiment, to be identical. Strains of laboratory animals are bred, at great expense, to be as nearly identical as possible. Of course, except in the rare natural occuring experimental situation, this is not possible for researchers on humans, unless the scientists worked in NAZI times, But I digress.
All sorts of factors in free living human populations come up, many of which relate to the outcomes of experiments. So called intermediate variables (confounders, effect modifiers, etc.), while we can try to "match" study subjects and controls in various study designs, this is far from perfect. So techniques were developed to gather such data, say smoking, or weight, and to try to adjust for their differential effects in generating results. With few such factors, simple tabular statistics, such as 2X2 table Chi square or T tests work, and with so called AVOVA techniques, (analysis of variance), even more statistical adjusting can be done.
But for many extraneous factors, and many thousands of study subjects, nore refined statistical techniques are needed. And these can also help to estimate the sizes and relevance of differences in study populations.so called "effect measures", and to guage statistical significance. As a group, these all are forms of what is called multiple regression techniques, and have direct impact on making predictions ("Models"), as in COVID -19.

Later, alligators. And I await careful reading and notification of my gramatical and other erors from my wanker detractors. Here, boys, come and get your treat. .

So if by compressing an electron ring I generate fusion heat, what happeens if my device enlarges the orbit of an electron?

If motion causes gravity and mass, if a massive object is placed at rest to the Universe, does it disappear?

If we smooth out the peaks and valleys over a portion of the fabric of space time, will the effect be local or will it spread?

The moon

We have traveled there and walked upon its surface. To my knowledge, there are no pictures of the dark side of the moon. Why is that?

Okay. One explanation of that is because it is cold...too cold for humans to survive. If that is the case, why not send a rover to take pictures of it? We have rovers on Mars.

What do you think the dark side of the moon looks like...or is?

It has been said that is where the aliens who "watch" us reside.

dunno

Edison...

Depending on the source, it's said Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb and had upwards of 10,000 failed experiments prior to success.
From what I've read, Edison was in a race for time as several European inventors were also doing similar experiments and that incandescent lighting was already in existence.

What he did, is come up with a patent on a commercially successful bulb with a viable filament.

Case definition...and science...

......Real science...VERY real. I know, I know, just how tedious I can be when I put on my real Teacher/Scientist fat Runt hat, VERY real, so I'll try to be brief.
Let's say you are doing biology with animals, plants or microbes. When you try to get funding, or to publish findings, the first levels of scrutiny involve spot on valid identification of your study/experimental, VERY MENTAL, models.
Recently, some of our family reflected on this with Dad, describing how much effort is put into exact characterization of mouse stem cell lines, by these hard working Interns at an international standards genetics research outfit. Selective breeding, DNA\RNA verification of cell cultures, yep---the whole nine yards.
So it is in studying various aspects of human health and illness. Enter the topic of valid case identification. Of course, for myriad reasons in free living human populations, the exact laboratory measures mentioned above can only be approximated, which of course dilutes things when it comes to sadistical analyses. It ain't a perfect world, peebles
So we hear about about how politics, once again, can slither into science. Worse, when big bucks are involved.
Apparently, on the data charts when patients are admitted to Horsepital, there's usually a little field for checking off, labelled as "Covid-19 Case?". If someone is admitted for any cause, and proper care involves being placed on a respirator, along with other information, checking off this field on a clinical hunch, involves more reimbursement for the Hospital from government, and even private insurance. Increase in billing can range from $11,000 to $39,000. Many people WITHOUT C-19 are placed on respirators.
Remember this every time that we hear of reported numbers of Cases/Death of C-19.
