Only 1.5 percent to 7 percent of the collective human genetic instruction book, or genome, contains uniquely human DNA, researchers report July 16 in Science Advances.
That humans-only DNA, scattered throughout the genome, tends to contain genes involved in brain development and function, hinting that brain evolution was important in making humans human. But the researchers don’t yet know exactly what the genes do and how the exclusively human tweaks to DNA near those genes may have affected brain evolution.
“I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to say what makes us uniquely human,” says Emilia Huerta-Sanchez, a population geneticist at Brown University in Providence, R.I., who was not involved in the study. “We don’t know whether that makes us think in a specific way or have specific behaviors.” And Neandertals and Denisovans, both extinct human cousins, may have thought much like humans do (SN: 2/22/18).
The results don’t mean that individual people are mostly Neandertal or Denisovan, or some other mix of ancient hominid. On average, people in sub-Saharan Africa inherited 0.096 percent to 0.46 percent of their DNA from ancient interbreeding between their human ancestors and Neandertals, the researchers found (SN: 4/7/21). Non-Africans inherited more DNA from Neandertals: about 0.73 percent to 1.3 percent. And some people inherited a fraction of their DNA from Denisovans as well.
Using a new computational method, researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz examined every spot of DNA in the genomes of 279 people. The team compiled results from those individual genomes into a collective picture of the human genome. For each spot, the team determined whether the DNA came from Denisovans, Neandertals or was inherited from a common ancestor of humans and those long-lost relatives.
Although each person may carry about 1 percent Neandertal DNA, “if you look at a couple hundred people, they mostly won’t have their bit of Neandertal DNA in the same place,” says Kelley Harris, a population geneticist at the University of Washington in Seattle who wasn’t involved in the work. “So if you add up all the regions where someone has a bit of Neandertal DNA, that pretty soon covers most of the genome.”
In this case, about 50 percent of the collective genome contains regions where one or more people inherited DNA from Neandertals or Denisovans, the researchers discovered. Most of the rest of the genome has been passed down from the most recent common ancestor of humans and their extinct cousins. It’s easy to be brand loyal to the moon. We’ve only got the one, after all, unlike Jupiter and Saturn, where you’d have dozens to choose from. Here, it’s luna or nada. Or not. The fact is, there’s another sorta, kinda moon in a sorta, kinda orbit around Earth that was discovered only in 2016. And according to a new study in Nature, we may at last know how it was formed.
The quasi-moon—named Kamo’oalewa, after a Hawaiian word that refers to a moving celestial object—is not much to speak of, measuring less than 50 m (164 ft) across. It circles the Earth in a repeating corkscrew-like trajectory that brings it no closer than 40 to 100 times the 384,000 km (239,000 mi.) distance of our more familiar moon. Its odd flight path is caused by the competing gravitational pulls of the Earth and the sun, which continually bend and torque the moonlet’s motions, preventing it from achieving a more conventional orbit.
“It’s primarily influenced just by the sun’s gravity, but this pattern shows up because it’s also—but not quite—on an Earth-like orbit. So it’s this sort of odd dance,” says graduate student Ben Sharkey of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at the University of Arizona, the lead author of the paper.
None of this means that Kamo’oalewa has to have especially exotic origins. The solar system is littered with asteroids, some of which are captured by the gravity of other planets and become more conventional—if fragmentary—moons. Others don’t orbit other planets in the common way but fall into line in front of them or behind them and pace them in their orbits around the sun, like the flocks of so-called Trojan asteroids that precede and trail Jupiter.
ither way, Kamo’oalewa was bound to get attention because its composition posed a stubborn mystery. Asteroids tend to reflect brightly in certain infrared frequencies, but Kamo’oalewa just doesn’t. It’s dimmer somehow—clearly made of different stuff, which suggests a different origin.
To investigate the mystery, Sharkey, under the guidance of his PhD adviser, planetary scientist Vishnu Reddy, first turned to a NASA-run telescope in Hawaii routinely used for studying Earth-vicinity asteroids. But even through the usually reliable instrument, the infrared signature seemed too faint. Instead they switched to a University of Arizona-run monocular telescope that, as Sharkey says, could “squeeze every last ounce of photons out of that object.”
That produced better, clearer results, but still they were incomplete. The rock was made of common silicates like other asteroids, but they were common only in their general composition, not in their infrared signature, which remained stubbornly off.
At last, the answer suggested itself. If Kamo’oalewa was behaving like a sort of quasi-moon, perhaps it was an artifact of the actual moon. Earlier in Sharkey’s PhD program, one of his advisers published a paper on lunar samples brought back by the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. When Sharkey compared the data he was getting in his telescope with what the earlier geologists came up with in the rock lab, the results matched perfectly. The kind of space-weathering lunar silicates undergo when they’re still on the surface of the moon precisely accounted for the differences in the infrared reflectivity between common asteroids and Kamo’oalewa....

Parental Guidance
As a boy approaches adolescence, he will find his thoughts turning more and more to an aspect of girls he was hitherto quite unaware of. Before long, he will start to wonder why, when he thinks about girls, there is something funny going on in his trousers. When a boy reaches this time in his life, he can find it very confusing, but not know where to turn to for answers to the many questions forming in his young mind. He will intuitively know that something needs to be done, but will have no idea what.
Although he will have heard some of the older boys talking about a mysterious thing called wanking, he won’t understand what it is, other than it has something to do with thinking about girls. It won’t quite make sense to him, yet he will sense it is something he needs to know about. It is important that a boy at this stage of his development is set on the right path, and not left to his own devices and be at risk of making a wrong turn.
This is when we, as responsible parents, need to step in and steer our child onto the right course. Many of us find it difficult to discuss such matters with our children, and when we try, our attempts can all too often be clumsy and unhelpful. Very often parents will keep putting off this embarrassing duty, and then before they know it, it is too late, and their precious boy has wandered off into areas of who knows what.
Most parents are not experts, nor do they have the teaching skills to properly impart the crucial information their child needs. When this is the case, it might be time to look for outside help. If a parent decides to take this course, it is important that they choose their teaching material very carefully. There is a little publication that I cannot recommend highly enough; it is called The Curious Boys’ Handbook, by Richard Pumper. This little book will take your child, step by step, from complete beginner to accomplished technician. It is packed with diagrams, hints and tips, and easy to follow instructions, and comes with an excellent troubleshooting guide. There is also a section at the back for Catholics, with a chart for working out how much guilt to attach to each activity.
With this little book in his hands, or one hand, your offspring can be left at home alone thinking you don’t know what he’s up to, while you go along with the pretence confident in the knowledge that he knows what he’s doing.

Trump, who tried to overthrow American democracy to remain in power despite losing the 2020 election, faces a federal court hearing Thursday on his request to block the National Archives from handing over hundreds of pages of documents from him and his White House staff regarding his actions leading up to and on the day of the assault on the U.S. Capitol.
And after four years of being able to argue that his executive branch was entitled to the benefit of any doubt when it came to carrying out the law, Trump suddenly finds himself on the opposite side of that balancing act.
“Much less deference,” Harvard constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe said, describing what Trump can expect from judges now compared with when he was in office.
Norm Eisen, who worked with the U.S. House on Trump’s first impeachment and was among a group of lawyers who filed an amicus brief in Trump’s lawsuit, said the issuance of an injunction is based on the likelihood of winning the case. “And because he is no longer president, he has dramatically less likelihood of success on the merits,” he said.
The House select committee investigating the Capitol riot has requested thousands of pages of documents from Trump’s White House now under the custody of the National Archives. Under the Presidential Records Act ? enacted in 1978 after Richard Nixon tried to ensure that White House tapes he had made would be destroyed after he resigned from office ? a former president has the right to ask the sitting president to block release of records on the grounds of executive privilege and, failing that, file a lawsuit.
Thursday’s hearing before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan is to determine whether Trump will be able to block the scheduled Nov. 12 release of the first batch of documents to the committee, following President Joe Biden’s decision not to assert privilege on Trump’s behalf.
But rather than turn to a constitutional legal scholar with expertise in executive-legislative branch disputes, Trump instead hired a lawyer whose Twitter biography reads: “MAGA lawyer fighting for the Constitution and free elections; RINOs beware.”
Jesse Binnall, who represented Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, as he tried to withdraw his plea of guilty to lying to the FBI, previously handled Trump’s lawsuit claiming election fraud in Nevada. That suit failed, and Flynn was pardoned by Trump before he left office.
At the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida, this February, Binnall claimed that judges across a number of states had conspired with the news media to suppress information about election fraud and had wrongly dismissed Trump’s challenges.
Binnall’s initial complaint in places reads like a Trump tweet. The select committee “has decided to harass President Trump and senior members of his administration (among others) by sending an illegal, unfounded, and overbroad records request to the Archivist of the United States,” Binnall wrote. “In a political ploy to accommodate his partisan allies, President Biden has refused to assert executive privilege over numerous clearly privileged documents.” ....

The historic failures within the Roman Catholic Church to address the infiltration by homosexual predators in the days of Fr.Malachi Martin causes one to ponder the fictional accountings of this demise.

The last details of my second work experience week is finalized!
Next week is my second work experience week. It was agreed to on the first day of week 39, and I was told, by the company, to email them in week 43, after my fall holiday from school ended. Well, we are now in week 43, so I emailed them at around 9 am. Within 15 minutes I got a reply back.
My first day starts at 8 am, and I have to be at a train station by then. That means I will have to get the train at 7.15 am, and I will arrive at 7.40 am. Now, the quick person will probably go "Wait, that's too early".. Yes, it is, but I prefer to be early for an appointment. Plus it gives me around 20 minutes to buy something to drink or eat.
It also means that I will have more time to get ready. Usually I am out of the door by 6.30 am, so I can stretch it for 15 minutes longer. Nice!
I know nothing about what type of haul I am going to be joining. I only know the name of the driver, Ismet. I am excited to know a new person, and to see what the job is about. From what I understand, it's a goods hauling business, which is exactly what I want to work with in the future.
It's gonna be so much fun!

As our Present Govt. claimed , they have Distributed Free Food for Poor people , well , they Only Count the Quantity and Not the Quality ... Our Present Indian Govt. lead by Blindfolded Followers of Toxic Aggressive Nationalism , DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE SCIENTIFIC FACTS that , the Advertisement they are Promoting upon the Food they have Distributed at Free/Low of Cost , has NO NUTRITIONAL QUALITY OR VALUE ...
