Ethical Shopping
I like avocados, I put them in salads. The trouble is; they are quite expensive and I find that about one in six of the ones I buy is black and mushy, inside. I do examine them thoroughly before I pop them into my trolly but, as yet, haven’t managed to find a way of accurately predicting their internal condition.
I don’t doubt for a minute that the store would immediately replace any inedible ones, with no questions asked, but it’s a fifteen minute drive each way and it really doesn’t seem worth the bother, and I really don’t want to hang on to mangy avocados until the next time I go shopping.
I do my shopping by the scan as you go method, so when I get to the checkout everything is already in my bags and all I have to do is pay for it. This means I only pay for what I have scanned. So, to come to the point, I’ve been wondering if it would be morally acceptable to not scan every sixth avocado that I put in my shopping. I’m sure the store’s position on this would be, no, definitely not, but they would be looking at the situation from an entirely different point of view to me. If they were to allow the practice, everyone would be not scanning half of their shopping on the grounds that there is always a possibility that something might not be up to standard.
My solution to our differing perspectives and the store’s argument against my proposal would be to not tell the store I was doing it. From both a philosophical and practical standpoint, this seems the optimal strategy. My problem would be solved and, by maintaining secrecy, no one else would be encouraged to do the same thing.
I do, of course, realise that a good deal of caution will be necessary in the execution of my plan, as the police tend not to be very imaginative regarding the distinction between creative problem solving and shoplifting.

Traveling...
For years while we were raising the twins, and I was struggling just to survive, and to get a little shite into one sock, avoided globe trotting. Past few winters, doing it once more, but much more selectively. The sparkle of most of the EU has long succumb to self loathing sociodemographic changes. As with some of my professions, they have simply taken much of the fun out of it. So if it's really not needed, why do it? But the real fun/educational opportunities remain, at least in a few areas. Over just a few weeks, have had many chats with (mostly younger) travelers from many places. Canada, Hungary, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Mexico, Spain, and others. Sure, it's nice to hike around a deep volcanic lake, within view of the ocean. To smell different flowers, and see other birds and frogs.To stroll down narrow streets, stopping into a lively cafe for cafecito, or a very drinkable/non American foreign beer. To lounge in a kur-like hot spring, while lunch is being boil cooked in a much hotter separate one. To visit foreign universities, to see how the students and profs are getting on. Just how others have settled on solutions to life's challenges, and not ignoring its opportunities. And less slothfully, no longer bragging about the writing tasks, but actually doing it. And much more. Last night I had a long chat with a friendly fellow from one of modern Asia's more hegemonic lands, where I visited years ago. Many economic developments there, but the cultural divisions in society are even less Confuscian/egalitarian if anything, both in towns small and large alike. Especially among the peasant classes. I was nearly shocked at his openess to be being honest and critical, yet rarely bitter, as I try to be with my country. Our two party systems are far from perfect. But where there is only one party, led by a tiny privileged self promoting group,---well, to quote Mr. Orwell,---all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. Hey Riz.

Most of the instructions are PDF versions of printed booklets that are included with each appliance. Owners manual, assembly instructions, parts list, etc.

In its latest guidelines for effective steering, distributed by state and private driving instructors nationwide, the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association advises that "recommendations relative to hand position on the steering wheel have become more flexible."
As cars have become safer over the years, "the steering wheel and associated mechanisms (have) changed dramatically," it says, meaning the familiar driving maneuvers "needed to turn the wheel have all changed." Principal among the changes is the incorporation of airbag modules in the steering column, which are designed to deploy upward to protect your head and chest.
That means the higher up the wheel your hands are, the more likely they are to be directly over the plastic cover when it opens — that is, when superhot nitrogen gas flashes and inflates the bag at 150 to 250 mph.
Among the injuries the NHTSA reports from improper placement of the hands when an airbag deploys are amputations of fingers or entire hands, traumatic fractures and a particularly stomach-churning injury called "degloving," which — trust us — you definitely don't want to look up.
AAA says the bags can also slam your hands directly into your head, causing broken noses and concussions.
"If the bag is going to go, it's going to take my hand and put it into my face — either one of my hands," Bob Hendrickson, head of AAA's network of driving schools in central Indiana, told NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis.
Experts also say new research in ergonomics suggests that what's called "parallel position" makes for safer driving in general.
Parallel position "improves stability by lowering the body's center of gravity and reduces unintended and excessive steering wheel movement which is a primary cause of young driver fatalities," the Texas Department of Public Safety says in guidelines for new drivers.
In plain English, that means "9 and 3," said Dallas police Sgt. Paul Hinton, who teaches law enforcement officers how to drive safely in emergencies like highway chases or when facing a wrong-way driver.
"That way I can go 180 degrees (one way), 180 degrees back the other way and then back to center," Hinton told NBC station KXAS of Dallas. "That's the way I'm going to be able to change lanes (safely)."
