Driving update - It's no longer appropriate to drive with hands at 10:00 & 2:00 position b/c airbags

Amazing isn't it... the more a Motor Vehicle becomes sophisticated the more dangerous it becomes ...maybe better to have a Robot driver and sit in the back seat with a Dr and Solicitor, and Undertaker... law of averages suggests we can't beat the odds .....mind boggles.... dunno
Well, my goal was to make it a little safer for everyone,
by updating us about a slight hand positioning change,
that would reduce the probability of injury.

But, your method has some merit too. laugh
I remember making a concientious effort to change the position of my hands when I first learned this but old habits die hard. Actually I've probably developed a bad habit of one hand driving since I moved to a slower city.

An airbag went off on me once when I was driving. It beat me up and burned my arms but no loss of body parts. I can't remember the position of my hands before the accident, obiously not ten & two.
As sort of a public service announcement, I figured the above info might save someone some injury.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Cars nowadays kinda force you to have a correct hand position, mostly due to all controls for media and driving being over there, for example my current car:

The hands are forced on the sides of the wheel, not so much above.
I don't know. That layout sort of entices people to put their hands
around the 10 pm and 2 am positions, where the larger openings for the fingers
and the narrow steering wheel diameter are.
One would need an unusual grip to be at 9pm & 3 am.
You rest your palm next to the buttons, not above them, so basically you drive 9am and 3pm. I can tell you with certainty as it is my car and I am immediately enticed to grab it that day since day one and never having driven another small and low wheel like this one.
It can't get any more 9am and 3pm than that! laugh
Yeah, I can definitely see what you are saying.
However, if it was me, I would like to have a better grip on the steering wheel itself.
I would be more tempted to be at 10 & 2 due to the larger openings there.
Perhaps not with the air bag situation however. uh oh
Yeah, I know what you mean! I guess it's because it's an electrically assisted wheel, you just don't have to do much effort to move it (I can move it with a finger, literally, and I'm not the strongest bloke you'll see), so I guess it's a matter of adjusting? Also the wheel is SO small, you don't really need to get a good grip in order to safely maneouvre the car in case of emergency (I've even saved myself from people opening doors without seeing the sidemirror more than once only driving on one hand, because it's a manual transm. so sometimes your hand is on the stick).

If a power steering belt breaks while you are driving, that perception may change.
It has changed my perception. head banger
Airbags sound terrifying and my car is equipped with 10 of them, my changes of surviving my safety measures will be nil.

You can now buy keyrings equipped with little knives and should buy one since if you are trapped by your airbag and don't have a knife in reach you could suffocate before rescued

jaw drop
@Jim: Yeah, thankfully I service my car every year, so the chances of that happening are less possible than me simply getting killed by a bus! laugh

@Biff: Don't airbags deflate immediately after impact?uh oh
