To the non-native English speaker, learning English can be a nightmare. Especially when you don’t have a good tutor on standby. Not that my own language is unblemished. We have exceptions to every rule and even rules to those exceptions with their own exceptions.

But what boggles my mind the most about English is how to pronounce the words. Why is it that the ough in similar looking words like cough, plough, through, tough, and though are pronounced different in each case. How am I to know how to pronounce it without the help of a native English-speaking person, bearing in mind that half our English teachers, esp in primary school, could not speak proper English.

As if that is not enough they also invented an animal called phrasal verbs. Things like throw up, throw down, throw in, and throw out. My first reaction will be to believe that throw up and throw down must be opposite actions but vomit and drop are not even related actions.

Next, we have make up, make over, and make out. Make up is such an interesting verb with at least 11 different meanings ranging from resolving an argument to fabricating a BS story.

If make up describes the action of applying facial cosmetics then surely the process of removing it, must be make down and, by the same logic, if shut up is an instruction to keep quiet then shut down must be permission to talk again. Right?

Then I did not even mention talk over, talk into, talk down, talk up, and talk out. Oh, and then we still have take on, take off, take in, take out, take over, take up, and take down. If an airplane takes off from one location, does it take on at the destination? I think not.

The strangeness of it all is that most these phrasal verbs have perfectly acceptable equivalents. Why can’t we rather use them? It is so much less confusing. Oops, was that an oxymoron?

I think I should stop it right here because one thing will only lead to the next and we will be here all day. But all this makes me wonder exactly who invented English and what they were smoking at the time.

Coming or going... this should be easy, but people usually get it wrong.

If I booked some service calls and the boss wants to know what is happening, I would be correct to say the serviceman is GOING to see Mrs. Smith at 2pm

I'm here and you are there. I invite you to my house and I say "Come over"
Let's say, you cannot go out and instead, invite me. You say "Come over."
In both cases the person is GOING to meet the other person.

Expecting you to COME to my house, I call and ask your whereabouts it's incorrect to say "I'm coming to your house" because (from your perspective) you are GOING to my house.

Coming or going... got it?

That's right, and they call others dumbasses. Verses more even tempered, educated, dialog prone sensibilities, in the service of learning for all. Just read it all right here, and there's no need for any other support for the existence of the Trump Derangement-Hilary Deficit Syndromes. And other syndromes as well, we gather. The dynamic is familiar, especially to the formally educated. The most common presentation is the enviously dismissive attitude about education itself, and the uses of logic. We've all heard it. "Higher (university) education is over rated. Street smarts rule"-and various equivalents. Typically it gets worse, as it becomes more rigid and defensive. Evidence for deep personal insecurities. Failures, again and again, in life. A major danger of the democratic process, as the ancient Greeks well knew. Repressive, authoritarian governments simply suppress all traces of BOTH world views. Easier to rule, if the soldiers remain well paid.
But interestingly, there's a frequent byproduct, in addition to the seething anger, and tendency to attack personalities, verses ideas. See who can guess just what this might be. Hint-it's behind the typical virtue signaling overuse of pejorative terms, such as racist, sexist, homo/xenophobic, and so on. Just read it all right here. And it only gets worse, when lubricated by the drink. Pathetic. But not hard to identify as such. QED. And warm tootles.

No, not Pluto. That's not a planet. Yeah, I know. It WAS classified as such, not long ago.
However, Pluto turns out to be little more than a relatively small ice ball and there's thousands of those in our solar system. In reality, there's are only 8 actual planet's......... that we've seen.
Regardless, it seems, that there is actually a 9th planet in our solar system.
But it is way out there. It may have been a lot closer long ago, but was kicked out of
the solar system for smoking. Just kidding.
But, it may have been kicked out to the edge by a slingshot effect
from a gravitational interaction with our largest planet.
Some believe, that interaction actually saved Earth from destruction.
It may have altered the movements of our largest planet to miss a collision course with our Earth.
Regardless, we now postulate the existence of this 9th planet in a similar way that we
postulated the existence of the 7th & 8th planets long ago. By the effect on other orbits.
