emmaline: see we agreed again...*trots out the little blighters again*
i must say there is a certain guilt associated, and outcasting o society if you live a very humble existence, with just basic comforts.
from fashion, to toiletries, and everything in between..if you dont fit the mould, it can be very difficult. some even resort to depression, and illness in the quest to consume and keep up with the joneses. some people are stressing/working themselves to death because of it
sometimes you have to look at the housing estates. nearly every house looks the same, all the furnishings are similar.
its a shame individuality and not buying into that culture of it is castigated nowadays
But....but...i like nice things, and i work to buy them for me,not because anyone else has got them.

I have never noticed a lack of individuality in my "social" circles..."business" circles either...that is a very interesting statement...and all encompassing too.....

if you decided to give up all your posessions, go live a cave, not paid for another thing ever again, wouldnt people be shocked?
In response to: Speaking of decisions, I agree that most people are intelligent enough to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, the majority of people have preconceived notions and are unable or unwilling to look beyond those. They're also generally lazy and will believe what they want to believe because they can't be bothered with facts. Both government and big business likes this about us and will continue to take advantage.
Yehbut.... in the meantime you/we have to live with the disasters these people produce... that doesn't bother you just a little? I mean they have created 2 wars and a global recession of monumental proportion never seen before... they've gone totally over the edge as far as I'm concerned.
That people are FORCED TO DIG for the truth as there is so little of it available within the hype. That they are constantly subjected to manipulations... just so a few can profit from them, whether for power, profit or personal vendetta without even a few token concessions to the deluded majority because they're too busy scrabbling for a paycheck or second or third job just to cover the mortgage to DIG for the truth?
You can see yourself, that at that point we really can't call ourselves a Democracy or a Republic... the theory has broken down to the self interests of a very few.

I understand what yo are saying, but that is going to an extreme. The human race has progressed with medicine, transport, technology in business and in the home.Just because people work to be part of this, and want the nice things in life,it doesnt mean they follow blindly. Who doesnt want a washing machine, lawn mower, hoover ect. People want to enjoy thier free time.I for one,but what i want for me,not because what i have been told,or what someone else has. Okay, there will be those that do,but there the ones who would want a 5 bedroom cave. Many people get into debt trying to keep up with the family next door, but progress cannot stop because of thier weakness. By people wanting to improve, jobs a created. No,its not perfect, but the perfaect system will never exist.

yes i used an extreme analogy, to make a point.
of course we HAVE to buy in, even if it is to a minimal extent.
even the caveman would have to buy in with products to make clothing out of.
emmaline: not suggesting you should, but we tend to view people that do as crazy or some such.
people who dont buy into what the societal norm is, are considered outsiders.
individualism is not encouraged. see what i'm getting at?
It is very easy to see what you are getting at....the problem, for me, is the way you go about it...it's as if every person in the world resides in your personal space...some people do not care to be labeled or pigeon holed.....and especially publicly and constantly...

i have no problem with anyone else doing what they do, so long as they do not chastise others who live differently.
i would sincerely hope that people are informed as to the chains behind their 'stuff'

Maybe some people do not care at all about anything but their own point of view... but it's a free world on the internet, isn't it? And money makes the world go round, doesn't it?
Isn't it true that we are not able to philosophically, morally or financially help the people in rebellion right now in the middle east because of our past complications?
No one said you had to agree... if you don't like what someone says, simply bow out.
