Merriweather: Nope Ralphy, I do not agree.. There are rules and rules and more rules... we follow them like sheep..
Didn'tcha know this country got wealthy from ' a sheeps back'

Howz me fish tea cooking along??

Rules are easy to impose on sheeple. If the law was changed and said that YOU must start wearing a Burka would you just go along with it without question ?

It was a grand day out but only chips on the menu tonight I am afraid. The fish were very illusive yesterday ....sigh

jac379: If there is a ban on women covering their faces, does that include wearing a scarf in the winter, or a woman covering up facial injuries with a proshtetic?

If the ban is for health a safety reasons only, such as reduced vision while driving, then why would facial covering be banned in all public places? I think in the UK there was a similar thing regarding turbans on the grounds that riding a motorcycle without a helmet was illegal. Turbans aren't banned in a public place, just because a helmet is a legal requirement for certain activities.

It seems odd to me that one big argument regarding facial covering is that its oppressive and there is a certain lack of choice for some women. To remove choice in the opposite direction doesn't seem like much of an excersise in liberation to me.

Hi Jac, wave

Never thought about the banned turbans, never heard of it... mind tho, rarely see a turban here...
Perhaps I dont look... dunnodunno anyway, what happened ? turbans banned because they weren't allowed on bikes?
or cos they dont make big enough helmets to accomodate a turban.. Jeez..

Re the second paragraph?? " To remove choice in the opposite direction doesn't seem like ......

Well then, what is an exercise in liberation... in your opinion?
I thought it was thumbs down to controlling males who like to keep their women hidden, thumbs down ??????

No. Turbans are not banned in public places, but riding a motor cycle without a helmet is illegal, excluding traditional Sikh men from riding one.

Therefore, if women's facial covering on religious grounds contravenes health and safety issues, they don't need to be banned from all public places, merely certain situations avoided, as above.

An excercise in liberation to my mind is allowing freedom of choice in as true a sense as possible. If somebody doesn't wish to eat pork, is it appropriate to make them go without all food, or provide a range of food to chose from?

In the first instance you don't provide a healthy choice - its a case of go against your belief system, or go hungry; the latter is as true a choice as possible given that its impractical to provide a choice of every single food stuff known to the world.

I'm no more impressed with the oppression of women by the use of possibly enforced, coerced, or manipulated requirement of facial covering than I am the possibly forced, coerced, or manipulated requirement of high heels and lip stick, but the enforced banning of certain oppressions is an oppression in itself and does not solve the issue, or promote freedom of choice. It exacerbates and inflames the issue.

The last time I looked, most people in a position to pass legislation were men. What does that tell you about the techniques used?

I think potential oppression in the form of face covering needs to be questioned and challenged, like many things, but this is not an intelligent way to do it. Its scoring an own goal, big time.

Plain and simple it should be a matter of personal choice. Never ban or required!

I wonder what the results would be if France were to have a referendum on this.
