Merriweather: It was for occupational health and safety reasons... I think here in Aus we are going to go down that road too... It has been argued that having a clear view whilst driving tends to lessen accidents as periphal view is important and plays a huge role in what a driver can observe..

With a face covering, it has been argued that only front focus is visible..

Now what if... a small child ran out and you could not see this child or animal or old person.. etc.. and you caused an accident or worse, because of a face covering...

I think if women want to wear a face covering whilst they go to their church, fine in church... but not outside in public... anyway, I hate that their blokes make them... Its the control thing I object to.. but hey

JMO.

wave... Hmmmmm, I wonder how Formula 1 racing drivers manage to see wearing their fireproof balaclava's and helmets !

matchbox: new law in france, women are banned from covering their face anymore, thats a law from now on, what do you think about this??
This is a tricky one,i'm for it as far as most muslim women do this because it's forced oppone them,by religion or husban.Against it as far as ,government sticking it's nose in places it does'nt belong!Maybe the nexed law will be you are banned ,from wareing sunglasses?cool

Hiya! wave

Hey do you know they are hiding salt in chippies now cos we shouldn't be allowed it? laugh

Anyway.. my opinion is based on the fact that Ive talked to quite a few Muslim women in the past about this very subject and it seems the majortity of women who wear the burka or hijab do it because of their own personal choice.

The French are banning it apparently because of a threat to their steadfast belief of liberty, equality and fraternity.

Liberty!! Maybe the French have a different dictionary to the rest of us

I don't know that they should be banned but I do think they should have to be removed for identification purposes when required i.e. when checking in for a flight, applying for and receiving a drivers liscense, etc...

They don't remove the covers here when checking into the airport so who's to say who or what's under that cover. And it would be really silly to have a drivers liscense with a photo of a veil clad person. Though I guess that would make it easier for people to use each other's liscenses. laugh

If there is a ban on women covering their faces, does that include wearing a scarf in the winter, or a woman covering up facial injuries with a proshtetic?

If the ban is for health a safety reasons only, such as reduced vision while driving, then why would facial covering be banned in all public places? I think in the UK there was a similar thing regarding turbans on the grounds that riding a motorcycle without a helmet was illegal. Turbans aren't banned in a public place, just because a helmet is a legal requirement for certain activities.

It seems odd to me that one big argument regarding facial covering is that its oppressive and there is a certain lack of choice for some women. To remove choice in the opposite direction doesn't seem like much of an excersise in liberation to me.
