I'm moving to Western Australia in a month for work (from India). Expect to stay there for a few years at least, so figured it's best to find out more about the customs and habits followed by the Aussies.
So, is there anything the Aussies have noticed the foreigners to do wrong on a frequent basis? What irks you most about guys from other countries? Anything specific you would want me to make a note of? What do you guys love doing on the weekends? What is something you can't tolerate outsiders talking ill about? Which beer is the all time Aussie favourite? (My personal preference is Heineken)
I would be staying in Perth and Paraburdoo mostly. Candid and honest remarks are invited. No offense will be taken. It's all good, let the gloves come off! :P
PS: It would be really nice if I could get in touch with someone from Perth/Paraburdoo. Would love to make new friends at the earliest!
Very basic, but probably the most commonly held attitude toward people from other countries Number 1 Speak english. Number 2 While you are here, be Aussie. Number 3 Don't tell people how good home is (they are likely to tell you to go back) None of that meant to offend, Just advice that should see you right throughout your stay. Welcome and enjoy the place, most of us seem to and there a hell of a lot around the world who want to come here.

Hi Random
Your english is very good, you sound like an aussie already.
Australia is a big country with a small population, so we like our personal space. I would suggest to you, when you are standing in a queue, leave a space between you and the person in front. Also when travelling on public transport allow a space between you and the person you sit next to. I know in India you are used to being crammed into small spaces with alot of people but we are not.
I would say the thing that grosses me out the most, I don't care where you come from (even an Aussie), is people who spit or blow snot out their nose.
You will also need to get used to people making jokes about India. It is an Aussie tradition to make jokes about every nationality, blondes and red heads. Do not take offence as it is not a personal attack. I would look up aussie jokes on the net so you can make fun of us too.

Welcome to Australia!
I agree with most that has been said already. If you are so open to fitting in already, you should do just fine. Hope it works out for you and you get to meet some local Perth people very soon.

Most importantly! Please don’t feed the wildlife while your up north, those crocodiles get used to tourist real quick, and its hard to keep up the supply? Off tourist!
When you have your days of in the clean sparkling waters of Perth’s beaches please be aware, at certain times we like to let the sharks have a swim by themselves! Getting blood stains of the white sands can be very harmful to the wildlife and labour intensive!
Some of the customs can seam strange at first but buying a round of drinks is considered an honour
Oh! And most importantly Aussies have a tendency too pull the piss out of everyone!

Thanks for the warm welcome and the tips! If you guys are a representation of the general Australian crowd, I think I'll have a great time! :)
@bluejay2011 Good tips. Will keep them in mind.
underwaterman: Oh and if you get over this side of the country feel free to visit - I love indian cooking lol
Won't do much good, I'm afraid. I can barely cook an omelette for myself!
tonyxf: We enjoy our babieques, grog, dirty jokes, and we dont wear burkas. Welcome.
I was christian by birth (an atheist now), so I'm not really accustomed to any burkas either. I actually find it quite offensive to women. Pretty unfortunate for them to be forced to hide their faces and all... But that's a discussion for another day!
AgentAjax: oh great more TAXI drivers
Haha! I certainly hope it won't come to that!
I also read somewhere that the word "root" doesn't mean the same in AUS. We are accustomed here in using the word as a substitute for "support". "Which team do you root for?", "No way I'm gonna root for that scumbag!" etc.
Guess I won't get the same response to these questions in Australia, eh?

The point regarding drinks seems reasonable though!
Lookin4missright: welcome
as they are sacred to us,
please dont eat our kangaroos
You eat my sacred cows, I eat your Kangaroos!! On a more serious note, do people actually eat Kangaroos? I can't be sure. Last year I visited China where people eat almost everything except humans! (And people kept asking me how I could eat beef, being an Indian!)
