A cop is in hot pursuit of a burgular.
The burg has a 27 step head start over the cop, and takes 8 steps to the cops 5.
However the cop's steps are much longer, and 2 of his steps are equal to 5 of the burg's.
Q\ How many steps does it take for the cop to catch the burgular?

Three men in a cafe order a meal the total cost of which is $15. They each contribute $5. The waiter takes the money to the chef who recognizes the three as friends and asks the waiter to return $5 to the men.

The waiter is not only poor at mathematics but dishonest and instead of going to the trouble of splitting the $5 between the three he simply gives them $1 each and pockets the remaining $2 for himself.

Now, each of the men effectively paid $4, the total paid is therefore $12. Add the $2 in the waiters pocket and this comes to $14.....where has the other $1 gone from the original $15?

Faithe: Two Grandfathers, two fathers and four sons are sitting around a table, how many are thier around the table?

I thought the answer would be four, after all the grandfathers are sons of their own fathers (not present) and the two fathers are sons of their fathers (possibly the two grandfathers present but not necessarily).

Faithe: $2,750

Hi Faithe, Re the pearls, I got a different answer, $3000. How do you justify $2750?
(I'm originally from Portland - is it still cold and windy?)

It only seems wrong because you are looking at it the wrong way. There are two other ways of doing the calculation which give you the right answer.
A. They each paid $4, hence total $12. Of this $12, $10 went in the till and $2 to the waiter.
B. The original amount was $15, of this, $10 went in the till, $3 to the diners and $2 to the waiter.

When you say "they are identical" do you mean they LOOK identical? if so, it could be that they are say a year apart but born on the same day of the year.
